Most of those AYB pics were perpetrated as pranks. Some of them are edited, but the ones that take place in the real world (Like the one outside the school: "Exams tommorow. All Your Base Are Belong To Us," are real.

As for the explanation of AYB, it started with an old game that was translated really badly from Japanese. People seemed to think it was really funny, so it started popping up in a lot of places, like songs and major websites (The old MS website used to have a pic of the paperclip from MS Office saying "All your base are belong to us!"), and even went outside the internet world and onto some TV news shows and such. There's an explanation of it somewhere on the AYB site.
