Of course we'll be patient Banshee, what choice do we have? Wink No one would ever flame you for it anyways.

I've done some heavy moves here and my audigy got 'fixed' on windows 98. My TSD runs slower than it should, because I reduced the sound card hardware aceleration.

I'm testing my windows xp now... just waiting for the blue screen of death.

You could try Linux with WINE. That may work better than Windows, although you won't be able to play online.

Playing online is important for someone who organizes PPM Plays Events Neutral

I found out that the culprit is the slot that the USB card is installed. I'll need to restart my pc soon to fix it.

I was suggesting it as a temporary solution really until you get 98 or XP working properly again.

Meh... my computer is being a hell today. Things just got worse, until the moment it refuse to turn on.

For some weeks, I was having an ugly problem that made my video card restart the system few times once  the computer turns on.  Today, I figured out that it's the power supply that causes it. Meh, if I buy a power supply now, I'll buy the most expensive one in the market, because all others can't handle my system.

And also, I have to buy a new motherboard, because the first IDE slot no longer works... I'm actually tired of this damn computer, but I'll have it working again and perfectly.

Meh, I can't loose this war and I won't.... but this computer is a big pain in the ass... it's the price of a gf4 with an audigy 2 platinum, 2 HDs, 2 CD  drivers, a USB PCI card because VIA sucks and a promise card because VIA sucks...

Good luck with that, just get the needed parts and then feel powerful when you know you have outsmarted your machine.

And suddenly... it works! Without new power supply, neither motherboard! Meh.. what the hell is going on? Is that a mirage? Or a trick from my windows Laughing (yea, blaming windows for motherboard and power problems... just show how I'm tired of Microsoft stuff even when they have nothing to do with it)?

I'm happy, but.. very confused! Afterall, what the hell happened???

No, not good Neutral. Few hours later it was screwed up in the same way. Then, I bought a new thermaltake 560w power supply to never have problems with it again. It stil didn't turn on Embarassed. I have to figure out what's going on...

That is indeed not good... Neutral
On the bright side, if your hardware is keeping it from turning on, and you've replaced the power supply, you're left with the motherboard.

Which really sucks, what with the nonexistant compatability between motherboards and components older than the week it was made.Rolling Eyes

If your computer manages to spark some life Banshee, transfer all the files you need from the computer like Voxels, trust me on this, a HD or computer corruption/problem can kill a mod in seconds  Neutral, good luck with the compy though.

I had a similar problem, except that a new power supply fixed mine...

As I said already, only two things can do that to a computer.
Power supply and motherboard.

After almost ruining my main hard disk (with an incomplete Windows XP instalation that refused to complete at all costs), I managed to install Windows XP and configure it here. I haven't tested any big game yet, although I'm browsing internet and doing several other activities without a single blue screen of death, which makes me think... "why in the hell do I still use windows 98?". So, XP is perfect here. This shall be enough to restart my activities.

But my windows 98 is having problems with the sound card. I was a fool to forget to disabled the ugly onboard sound card before starting windows 98 and it ruined my Audigy 2 there. I had problems after a reinstallation of the Audigy and now I have no sound at all. I'll try to figure out how to fix that, even if I have to reinstall Windows 98 again.

Get Zone Alarm and AVG if you don't already. Also the SP2 is more secure, but also breaks some apps.(CnC Games work, the XP and RA2/YR issue isn't anything to do with SP2)

I'm using SP2, Stu. I've also disabled server, terminal, telnet, remote assistance and other things like that. I'm using firefox as main browser. Internet Explorer was fired.

You're best not using MSN Messenger, Windows Media Player or any other Microsoft application that connects to the internet as well if you want to be as secure as possible.

I wish I could use Firefox for Windows Update and ActiveX controls, then I could permanently get rid of Internet Explorer.

Solution: throw your comp off a VERY high cliff, disassemble parts that remain intact, then ship each itsy bitsy piece to a seperate country, and buy a Mac! Very Happy

Don't get a Mac, instead install a Linux distro on your existing computer. It's about £1500 cheaper and is, overall, much better. You could also be daring and install a BSD distro, but it's not like you need the world's most secure and stable operating systems or anything. I think it's actually possible to use ActiveX in Firefox, not that you'd want to considering the amount of security holes in it. Just like MSN Messenger, I suppose.

Do you know any cool Linux distribution that supports 64 bits processors (AMD Athlon 64)?

http://www.ubuntulinux.org

Just to warn you, if you run the 64-bit version then you'll have to go through a painful method of running 32-bit packages. You'd be better off running a 32-bit Linux distro first, and upgrade to 64-bit once more programs are running properly. Unless you want to compile everything from source, of course Wink.

I like strange names, it makes it stand out more from other Linux distros. The releases so far have been called:
Warty Warthog
Hoary Hedgehog
Breezy Badger - current stable release
Dapper Drake - unstable release

As for Macs, they're overpriced and overhyped. The only semi-decent thing to come out of Apple Computer was the iPod, and it took two years for them to make it slightly worth buying.

You know Banshee, I thought my computer was bad. All I get is the fact that, for it to run at all, I need a pedestal fan on full bore pointing directly into the open side of the case.

Have you tried just resetting the bios on the motherboard? Either that, or start removing parts from the computer such as any auxillary cd drives. Get it down to the bare minimum of parts (HDD, CD, memory, mb, graphics) and then try and see what it's doing.

Ahem... I know much about these situations. If you can tell EXACT what's wrong with your comps, i can tell. I own a XP and a win98 too. (and i got MANY problems with them!)
