I love abandonware.  For those of you that don't know, abandonware is a game or games that has/have been abandoned by the original publisher (no longer sold in stores, no tech support provided, not advertised, or designated by the company as abandonware), or who no one owns the rights to any longer (company dissolved, owner died, et cetera).  Some of the best masterpieces in gaming are abandonware.  Take Anacreon: Reconstruction 4021.  It is quite possibly one of the best 4X games - or even the best GAME, period - in existence.  You can get it at Home Of the Underdogs, as well as various other abandonware sites.  However, only HoTU has the game's manual, so you sorta have to go there to be able to play it.  I would recommend this game to any fan of 4X games.  Trust me, it's a must-have.  Then there's Balance of Power, tied with Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert (both of which are also to be found on abandonware sites) for second-greatest game ever made.  Balance of Power is a political/diplomatic game that requires you to devise some of the most devious, cunning, and complex strategies of any game.  It is phenomenally challenging, and the version I found on HoTU has the anti-teft system disabled, so when the "Are your papers in order" dialog appears, all I have to do is press enter, taking away a major annoyance.  Balance of Power is the perfect game for experienced strategy gamers looking for a new challenge.  Think of it as what would result if chess, poker, and chicken were blended together.  You play as either the Soviet Union or the United States in the early '90s, and the object of the game is to gain international prestige while hurting the other player's prestige.  You do this by initiating crises, situations where the two nation's opinions clash.  At first, it is merely backchannel communication that no other countries know about, so no prestige is lost.  If neither side backs down, it escalates to a diplomatic crisis.  This is now public, and the side that backs down risks embarassment on an international scale.  If neither side backs down from a diplomatic crisis, it escalates to a military crisis.  Backing down from a military crisis is the ultimate humiliation for a country, resulting in a massive loss of prestige.  However, escalating can have adverse consequences.  At first, it is merely threats that are exchanged.  However, if both nations stand firm, military readiness is escalated to DEFCON 4 and more prestige is at stake.  If either side goes to DEFCON 1, a war is started, causing you to lose the game.  Overly tense soldiers can also ignite an accidental war at DEFCONs 3 and 2.  Caution and boldness must be carefully balanced, and you must make sure you have good intelligence before acting.  Each game only lasts seven turns, but a single turn can last over an hour because of the sheer amount of information you have to go over.  This is a game that requires a lot of time.

Post reviews of your fave abandonware games here!

I can't download anything on cgarchive, it directs me to a "this page cannot be found" thing every time I try to download.  That's happened like, twenty times, so I don't even go there anymore.  And yes, I am a member, and yes, I had enough credits.  Have any of you dl'd Balance of Power yet?  I need a PbEM buddy.

I can't download it. Wel, I can, but then the only time I can play on it is at school, at lunchtime. And I doubt this peice of crap could handle it.

do you mean me or the computer?

If you mean the comp, the game is fifteen years old.  A 486 could run it.

If you mean me, I'm actually quite good at BoP. :p

i think as all C&C games exept for Generals as abandonware, EA isnt making well needed patches, mapbuilders, ect. Modders are stuck with the job of fixing games GLITCH BY GLITCH!

EA is releasing/released the all in one pack bugfess thing. Which compleatly removes any posibility of any of the games being classed as abandonware. Can't be abandoned if they are trying to make money from it.
