Well, I made this model awhile back and tried putting it in voxel form, but I couldn't get the colors through the 3DS2VXL process, so I quit. Hopefully someone can maybe make this a vxl, in fact it'd be greatly appreciated. Very Happy Anywho, the legs and turrets are in different pieces for all your editing needs. I'd watch for this bad boy in the SHP forum in the future...

Well for starters... What are you using to export that to 3ds? I cant import it into 3dsmax... I was gonna import it to 3dsmax and show you how to set it up right... If your even using 3dsmax... If not, you really should... As thats what 3ds2vxl was made to use... 3ds models from 3dsmax. Now that doesn't mean thats the only program that can be used... I have used Gmax then used another program to export it as 3ds and it worked pretty good.

And truthfully... A shp version of that would be kind of bad... Well depends how big your gonna make it... Just think about that big mech in AR2... So many problems... just pretty much an eye sore.

Ya, I'm using TrueSpace which apparently is retarded when it makes 3DS. I've been looking into 3dsmax, but it's too complicated for me to learn atm. Anyway, I've been thinking of completely redoing it from lack of detail, because it's to late to fix some of it up.

Ah, havent tried Truespace. So I wouldn't know anything about it.

But 3dsmax is pretty easy use I think.

http://www.video-tutes.com/packages/3d1.php

This site has a bunch of video tutorials... If you want to learn how to use 3dsmax watching some one else might be a good way for people who have a hard time figuring out how to use 3dsmax.

Also! Vxls don't need extreme details... Infact I think the more Polly's and details you add the more ugly a vxl can get. As it stands as of right now it would probably be fine.

Thanks Mad.
Now if only I can get a computer that can run 3dsmax... Laughing Then I can have skins that actually stay when I export to vxl...
The body is badly in need of an overhaul (extremely rounded), so I'll be working on it next.

Truespace is pretty much excellent when it comes to easy and fast modelling, catasctrophic with anything else. You could try Blender, if you can stomach it's hard (but great) GUI. It should run no problem. Or anim8tor, Wings3D. These shouldn't be too heavy on hardware. The only mostly bug-free method of exporting Truespace meshes to 3ds I know is Truespace to... I don't remember which format->Blender to .obj->Wings3D to .3ds #Tongue.

3dsmax doesnt have that bad of a system requirement... At lest I dont think...

Hardware
Minimum requirements for 32-bit versions:

Intel® Pentium® IV or AMD Athlon® XP or higher processor
512 MB RAM (1 GB recommended)
500 MB swap space (2 GB recommended)
Hardware-accelerated OpenGL® and Direct3D supported
Microsoft Windows-compliant pointing device (optimized for Microsoft IntelliMouse®)
DVD-ROM drive

I modelled in many programs on Celer 633:P.
Including Blender (The only free one that can compete with 3DS Max imo).

Ooh...is that what that gun's supposed to be...I couldn't really tell, but ya, I'll change that.

Still waiting for a new computer, so I can use 3DsMax. In the mean time, I'm practicing my voxel skills so that U can release it as a voxel. (oh and I tried making an HVA of the legs moving, but its so huge my computer can't handle it. So I'll have to wait.)

I figured out the problem with my 3Ds. TrueSpace renders .3ds files without the proper coodinates and lighting and color format, therefore 3DSMAX cannot read them.

A couple more weeks, and I should be able to recreate this.

I think I've redone this particular "vehicle" about 20 times now, I just can't seem to make it look good enough for release.

I promise, it'll be released before or with Final Dawn.

I need a scheme, see. Steampunk, High-Tech, show me something to work around. Without a scheme I can't rework this, and also debating on changing it to a 4-legged walker instead of 5, as 5 is kinda unneeded and difficult to maneuver.

Ideas?

(god that first work is awful looking, trashy.)

It's sort of got that battleship vibe to it.  Id go with trying to enforce that, with portholes and smokestacks and that little conning tower at the back.

Yes, show ingame.
And do it with 4 legs if 5 are difficult.

Rough Draft #1

Thoughts: Now I realize why I stopped trying to make this; Westwood drew this and it makes completely no sense. Look at the back of this thing. Look at it. What back you say? Exactly my point. Looks like it makes sense on paper, sure. But when it comes down to it, it makes absolutely no goddamn sense in 3D.

Anyway, how's the portholes, too many?

Tell me how to fix this!

It does seem like too many portholes.

As for the back...  I have no idea what should be going on there.  If it has five legs, with two at the front, two at the sides, then that must mean that the back has a leg on it.  And that's not a great thing to have to work into the back.

UPDATE: Debating on the final look of the main cannons, turrets are very rough, as are the legs. Problems and feedback would be appreciated!

I think there should be some kind of housing for the leg to body joint, especially useful for hiding the rotation in the walk cycle.

HEY! It was called the land battleship. Theres already a unit named the battlefortress. Land battlefortress? All Battle fortresses are land based, unless someone can prove me wrong right now.

Stick to the original material. With five legs its more bad ass.

It's the Centurion Siege Crawler's way bigger and meaner cousin! The Chrono Prison can't touch this. Yuri craps his pants staring at it.
