Subject description: A Red Alert 1 Campaign (demo)...

I really don't know if this would be the place to put it, but it is Red Alert.

So I've been playing some Red Alert... 1. And I made a couple maps that are probably going to be apart of a larger campaign. My campaign follows the style of Defection and Desperation, two excellent campaigns over at Red Alert Archive. It is essentially a retelling of the Red Alert story, starting with the invasion of Poland (yeah, like WWII, except no one cares at first).

The briefing is what I really like about the other campaigns, it comes in four parts:

War News - What the hell is going on in Europe at that time.

Mission - What are you actually doing.

Reconnaissance - Some map details, but hopefully it doesn't give away the map.

Research - What new units and structures are upcoming and what is at your disposal.

The faction tech trees are also different. The two factions have fairly similar tech trees with small differences. For instance, the tank line (Light - Medium - Heavy - Mammoth) is to be available to both factions throughout the campaign, the only difference is the starting point (Allies start with Light Tanks, Soviet with Medium Tanks).

And so here are what the missions are:

Allied Mission 1 - Good Will

Escort a Red Cross truck through occupied territory to reach refugees that have been isolated by the Soviet incursion. (Switzerland still stays neutral since they claim it is simply a precaution)

Soviet Mission 1 - Crossing the Line

No backing down now, the time has come. Invade Poland with a tank spearhead and destroy everything in this part of Poland. Leave nothing standing.

The missions themselves may not be particularly difficult but are somewhat challenging and good fun IMO. Very Happy

If someone can somehow capture some ingame screenshots and post them, please do. All the other times I've tried to take ingame screenshots failed due to some color issue.

EDIT: Also, I'm still tossing around names for the campaign. I'm thinking "March of Death" but that may be a bit too negative.

BTW why is this in RA2 mapping forum? Was hard to find.

Anyway, my criticisms #Tongue:

Allied 01
- When they say "blow the bridge!" the bridge should just explode instead of the anti-climax of rocket troops trying to blow it up.
- Generally needs a bit more finesse such as losing control of the truck once its over the bridge (and maybe it should leave the map), more scripted events like Soviets attacking civilian towns and such.
- IMO there shouldn't have been the big disused base and walled off area... seemed like a waste of space that could've been filled with a civi town and cliffy area or something.

It was pretty good, just needed a few more Soviet traps.

Soviet 01
- Objective needs to be a lot clearer. "Destroy everything" should definately not include civi structures as thats just monotonous.
- Hiding Red Cross kennels amognst civi buildings is cheap. #Tongue
- Dirt roads are weirdlt straight, seems youve been repeating the same tile.
- The bases (especially the Soviet base) are way too symmetrical, try a more interesting layout.
- From the mission description I expected I'd have to look out for Red Cross trucks leaving the map as well, which would have been more interesting IMO.

Yeah, there isn't a RA1 map sections so that's why I was questioning if this would be the right area.

Anyway, my criticisms #Tongue:

Allied 01

That would probably be a good idea. I shall see what I can do.

In RA, you can't change factions, and it has a lot more limitations, thus I really can't do anything about the truck. The truck is suppose to leave the map, but if you command it to stay you can still loose. I will see about the attack the towns, they're suppose to be in ruin, but attack some would probably be a good idea.

TBH, that is just what it is, it felt a little repetative to use more civilian buildings, but I guess I could fill it with a town or some cliff thing.

It was pretty good, just needed a few more Soviet traps.

Would some land mines do it?

Soviet 01

This mission kind of mimics the first defection mission, I am planning on putting in a timer. Perhaps I should put more civilian resistance than Polish military forces.

- Hiding Red Cross kennels amognst civi buildings is cheap. #Tongue

Really, they were to simulate dog houses. Should they be removed for the confusion?

- Dirt roads are weirdlt straight, seems youve been repeating the same tile.

This is true, the roads were to be more straight roads like going through a real urbanish area. Unfortunately, Red Alert lacks paved roads or even particularly straight roads.

- The bases (especially the Soviet base) are way too symmetrical, try a more interesting layout.

The Soviet side is a whole build up area, it could probably use a little bit more creativity though so I'll change it around a little. The other bases I'll see about redoing.

- From the mission description I expected I'd have to look out for Red Cross trucks leaving the map as well, which would have been more interesting IMO.

I may include this if I have time to, but it seems like unneeded stress on top of unit preservation and a time limit(to be added in later). Another thing is that they are just in the process of evacuating when the Soviets catch them.
