I suggest that the 3D preview be repainted only when the voxel model is changed.
Once I worked on a voxel model with VXLSE III on a small laptop. The fan in the laptop produced a pretty loud sound. and after about 2 hours, it suddenly shutdown without warning, leaving great frustration. I guess it was because the processors were too hot to continue working.
At present, the application just repaints the 3D view whenever it's idle. That is too frequent. Most repaints are actually unnecessary and will kill our processors, won't they?

Which version of the program are you using?

Version 1.38. Have you done that in the latest build?

I've completely rewritten the whole rendering system in the unstable versions and it includes a way to cap the FPS.

Wow... Your reply comes so quickly...
It must have been a lot of work to completely rewrite the rendering system! BTW, how did you manage to limit the FPS? Did you use a timer or something similar? I have made the program repaint the 3D view only when the user modified the voxel model, therefore a FPS counter no longer made sense, but the auto rotating features were lost. Maybe we can discuss this in the development section instead of here. Actually I would like to contribute to the program, as I'm enjoying my beautiful winter vacation.
Well it's 0:37 in China. I must go to bed now Smile

Your approach fails when the user tries to interact with the model by rotating it or doing a zoom in and zoom out operation... and yea, when auto rotating it as well and when it is animated (in the 3D preview window, you can animate it). So, FPS counter and cap still makes sense.

Anyway, we can discuss development at VXLSE III's main forum.

Yes, but don't worry, I have now modified the code to re-enable some user interaction such as mouse drag rotating and zooming. I'm now trying to rewrite the auto rotation feature, where I must reintroduce the FPS counter. Later I'll post my achievements in the main section.

The rendering code was totally rewritten. The chances of your code being used if you modify 1.38 are minimal... I recommend you getting the latest code from the SVN.

Check the welcome.txt from Voxel_Tools at http://svn.ppmsite.com

Well, I'll check it out and study the latest source code.
