Eh, it isn't much of a fanfic. But I guess it's better than coming up with your own universe, and then having to explain everything.

Anyway, I am tired of military circlejerk of C&C fanfics. Let's give civilians some time in the limelight.

Actually, you know what, I think this writing gives a great enough reason to kill civies left and right.

And yeah, I had to convert the first part from present to past tense, so it could be a bit messy. Well, it was worse, I'll give you that.

Quote:
There is something… strange about fighting machines, in my opinion. In a way, they should be a complete opposite of every soldier. Like surviving and not killing for killing sakes or whatever they come up with as an excuse to get their free mental therapy. Or at least, every sane soldier should be an opposite of a machine. I doubt the existence of such people, of course, but I prefer to live a long and cowardly life of a civilian, rather than a short and “glorious” one. Or whatever the recruiters can come up with, as an excuse to send another batch of young idiots to die. I was smarter than them, of course – staying away from military was the best choice I ever made, in my opinion. Of course, I made mistakes of my own, like getting stuck in a middle of a firefight. A battle, even, due to it’s scale. But either way, I was hiding under the bed which stood in my small apartment within a civilian shelter.

Sure, it could have been my Karma or some shit like that – it tends to be very hostile to smart people (like me). Alternatively, it could be fate. Wait, isn’t it the same thing? Well, smart people have better things to do, than to ponder this philosophical concept at such situations. Mainly because some 7 feet tall bastard made of metal, flesh, and wires, was rummaging through their apartment. My apartment, of all the places! Nod tends to be very sudden in their attacks, that’s for sure.

Of course, originally I was wondering why the kid from local Nod-affiliated gang did not warn me about this. Initially, I thought that he got high off the EyeCandy he kept buying with the money I gave him. What? I like children, especially if they can hold such information that could save your ass. I don’t know about you people, but this saved my life a few times, that I can attest to. Anyway, speaking of that kid, a few moments later I did see him, before the rude intrusion by this thing, upon my rightful domain. The kid ran into a GDI trooper’s line of fire, giggling manically, as he was shot to pieces by rapid fire. So hey, I was right, he was high as a cloud, so extra points to me, and I would prefer to spend those points on my future survival. I should feel bad for the kid, or something. But I am indifferent to the failures of others. I’ve got better things to do.

Speaking of better things I had to do, I was thinking up a way to get out of that mess. GDI lost the town, that was for sure, and I didn’t feel like staying around for executions. Especially since I could be one of the individuals standing in the firing line, owning a GDI ration card and a low-level security pass (or a few). Well, yeah, the kid was useful, I’ll give him that, but he isn’t going to be of any help ever since he experienced those free bullet samples, himself. I shouldn’t think so often about dead people, it brings bad luck. Or karma. But whatever it is, it seemed to have gotten better for a moment – Mister Robato has got into a fight somewhere on the staircase. So, fire escape it was.

Let’s establish some concepts first, though. Fire escape is good. Fire is bad. Seems simple enough, right? Now, what if you combine them together? That is correct - you have broken the escape ladder of course, melting it away by the heat of fire! As always, Nod soldiers had shown that they have mental capacity of a pyromaniac child, without the added bonus of being able to watch them self-immolate into the closest emergency room. Ah, those fun moments when someone’s mistake is your free entertainment. Sadly, this mistake (but then again, who knows those fanatics?) has brought only annoyance and discomfort, to me. Well, it was going up, then - the building roofs are usually close enough to jump from one to another. I’ve done that before, and I was there to exploit this, once more.

Jumping from one roof to another made me think of things to keep my mind from the idea that I was committing the worst possible action in a war zone. All things considered, I would make a terrible superhero, mainly because heights are not something I have uncontrollable love for. Honestly, I prefer walking, and in this case, maybe running. But hey, I got some great views of the fight, while both side’s soldiers were too busy or too confused, to notice me. So, the plan is simple. Get to GDI controlled part of town, show the ID for low-level personnel, get evacuated, once we arrive to a better town, get out of the transport during the chaos before they double-check the ID, and live your life in another small town, until it gets overrun by Nod, Tiberium, Looters, or Shiners. Man, we live in a fun world, don’t we? If you don’t get killed by some brainwashed idiot, you die from green shit that eats you alive, or by some batshit insane bastard who lost any idea what humanity means. Fun, fun times, that’s for sure.

But now that I approach this one roof, I was getting ideas that maybe this plan wouldn’t work out, mainly because an entire region of the town was in rubble. That’s great. That’s beautiful. Why don’t you shove up your gun barrels up your own ass, you goddamned fanatics? Was it really that difficult to not screw up my day any more? I had to get down to the streets, where the fighting was still raging. Well, there may have been a chance that someone’s car is still around – and as long as it’s in running conditions, I can find a way to get it running, I’ve seen the movies, I know the drill. Maybe I could even find a gun – that’ll be of some use (either side will shoot to kill a man with or without a gun, anyway), but then again… artillery doesn’t leave thing intact, and I haven’t felt like going through the leftovers, just so someone can die by my hand. Beside, this would be just a waste of my time, and I had to get out of there, fast – war zone isn’t the best place to wander about. Not for my health, at least.

And just as I descended back to the ground floor, another shoot-out begins in a location in close proximity to me. So close, that I ran into some GDI trooper. I got lucky that it was just a Medic, otherwise I would’ve been shot immediately, especially since the Nod cultists are still running about (and in increasing numbers as well). Instead, the Medic was just beating me down with their handbag, or whatever they usually carry, until they noticed that I wasn’t fighting back, and that I was, indeed, a civilian. Protectors of free world, damn them all to hell, they’re little more than apes. With guns, armor, supplies, and vehicles. You know, I can take a little beating, if that gets me what I want. That, and of course getting cut up by scalpel, was not within my plans for tonight – and knowing some of the people who went to medical schools... they aren’t that rare, those people, I’ll tell you that.

Remembering that GDI are supposed to protect the civilians, the Medic was nice enough to help me back on my feet. Even more amusing, I then realized that Medic was a woman (for someone else this might be belittling, but hey – I am not the one wearing heavy armor in this situation), so I had more reasons to act nicer. Before we could have a civilized conversation where I get to voice my opinion in regards of random acts of violence by military personnel, however, she told me to stay in cover and ran off to check on some obviously dead man (I mean, I am not doctor, but the area that Gray Matter covered, is too large for any living man to leave).

Well, other soldiers seemed to be smarter than the suicidal bitch, and were trying to fall back. One of them waved for me to run somewhere towards the southern ruins, but considering that the amount of gunfire coming from closest building has increased exponentially, I didn’t need any hints. Despite the rather heavy gear, most of the soldiers took the lead, leaving me, Medic, and some other trooper to cover the rear. Obviously realizing that the crazed cultists are equal opportunity killers, I understood that position in the middle at least gave me reasonable meatshields from the sides.

“Those who have once brought chaos upon us, shall be purged in the Chaos of their own making. Death shall come to those who defy the true words of Kane! For Kane Lives in Death! And into oblivion of Death, we shall plunge all who stand before our goal of divination. And as you have been touched by the touch of that divination, you shall take stand so that it proclaims dominance on the scorched Earth, so we can proclaim a new Golden Age – the Age of Holy Tiberium!”

…and in death they shall soon repent. I alone, shall purge them, as within my mechanical sarcophagus, lies faith and the word of Kane. As I have stood from the ruins of GDI corruptions, I opened fire upon the enemies of Kane, using my holy arsenal. And I beheld the death screams of those who were as weak as their regime, when they dropped to ground choking on the blood made toxic by it’s consumption of hatred and lies. Cowardly as always, the minions of GDI took cover wherever they could find it. And within their ranks I saw a civilian, most likely a traitor, defiled by the false ideals of GDI. He shall join the vile monsters of GDI in their oblivion, as he joined them in fear.

FUCK THE WHAT?! This was of course, the most fitting thought for the moment, considering a quarter of the squad have seemingly exploded into a shower of gibs, due to pressure exerted upon them by large caliber bullets. Now, this sounds much prettier than it actually was, believe me. Anyway, since my meatshields did not work efficiently enough (as in, they died too quickly for me to run away), I took the liberty of hiding behind some large pieces of rubble, while the troops would duke it out. That is of course, before I realized that the troops are less suicidal than I assumed, and got into any available cover as well. Now the Killing Robot Person of Doom™ (clever, I know, but humor does help, you know) was slowly advancing, trying to kill us, turning this into some weird, violent, and deadly game of Whack-a-Mole.

However, this was a game that we were losing. So, luckily enough for me, the officer of their squad told two troopers to escort me off the battlefield, while they shot the Tin Can. And of all the people, I was given the Medic and some Arnold (Schwarzenegger, classic movie actor of 20th century, I told you I’ve seen the movies) sounding guy who was (quite literally) armed with exploding disks. Great, an unarmed woman (she did beat the shit out of me, but then again, I am a civilian!) and some guy carrying enough explosives to bring down a city block. I’d prefer taking my chances alone, knowing the tendency of those guys to explode, especially if they get hit by gunfire.

But hey, it wasn’t my choice (sadly or otherwise), so once the rest of the squad opened fire (losing 2 more people in process, learn to duck guys (or was it dunk?)), while we made a run for it. I, wearing absolutely no armor of any kind, was in front of the procession, Medic right behind me, and Arnie bringing up the rear. Sure, if anything got in front of us, I would be screwed. But considering that bullet-spewing man-machine was behind me, I didn’t have time to reconsider (lack of time to think is another reason why I dislike battlefields and various officers).

No one shall escape the rightful purge! No heretic! No defiler! No escape!

Of course, Karma/Fate/Whatever went out of its road to screw me over once again. And so, the metal gorilla, for unknown reason, changed it’s target from obvious danger, to a bunch of running people who really just wanted to get out of this mess. Of course, the best target was Arnie, and so he died, once a bullet went right into the pack full of explosives. Luckily, he was lagging behind us, and so, the blast wave only threw me slightly off balance. Medic, however, was not as lucky, as parts of Arnie’s suit (and probably his skull) wedged into her back, alongside the blast wave, throwing her on the ground. She tried to get up, and in that moment I realized, that the gunfire from GDI trooper’s guns have become extremely quiet. The Medic couldn’t even sit up, and instead, amongst the cries of pain, she reached out her hand towards me. Even through the misty glass of her helmet, I saw the helpless gaze of her eyes. Like any good gentlemen, I should have helped her to get up, and tried to get us both to safety.

And then the last trooper shrieked in pain, as he was literally ripped in half by weapons fire. This was a signal for me to run the fuck out of this place. The bitch was a soldier, and the soldier’s glory is to die. Or something they wrote down on the recruiter’s posters. The point is, I am alive, and she probably was only for so long. I already could hear the slow, metal-echoing footsteps of the monstrous construct. But it was all behind me now, and I never knew what happened to that damned Medic, ever since that moment. Not that I was particularly interested – although I was curios why I didn’t hear that one last shot.

“But even those who are corrupted may be redeemed. Even a saint may in error, serve evil. And thus one must liberate them from the lies, so they may aid us in righteousness of spirit, mind, and body.”
The minion was a woman, and to say that her bravery was grand was to say little. I have seen her trying to shield the fool who left her to die, and in her actions there was no mistake. A strange sight it is to see one of such quality on the side of the grand evil. But at the moment, in my heart, I understood that as long as she has lived, she could be redeemed and shown the true path. Although she tried to fight me in melee, bleeding out her last bits of life, I stopped her futile attempts with a slight stunning shock from my arm. Rest, child, for your life is to change in great leaps from this day on.

You can’t imagine my happiness when I ran across one of the last operating evacuation depots. I was about to hug the soldiers who were holding me back, but of course, I had much more important matters at hand – escaping this hellhole. They quickly let me through after seeing my ID card, and opened fire on something behind me. When I turned to look, I was relieved to see that it was just a bunch of cultists, rather than that infernal contraption. Later, I would be told that they were just Cyborgs, but that didn’t make any happier, than I was at the thought of escaping one. I got into an APC, took the spot close to driver’s hatch (not too close though, knowing where the rockets tend to hit those vehicles, its important to stay away from those places), and as the vehicle filled with various no-name non combat personnel, I happily fell asleep, awaiting the moment where I will be in safety once again. Sadly that moment was not to come soon, but I didn’t know that.

Anyway, mind getting me another drink? Something caffeinated, synthetic or not, it doesn’t matter. Ineed a quick break to gather up my thoughts, okay?
