Hi guys, I'm a bit pissed off with regards to antivirus software. I've used Avira and Bitdefender, both of which felt too intrusive for me (Bitdefender didn't allow me to ignore certain files, and Avira...it's just plain bad).

Right now I'm using AVG, but I don't have a firewall at all, although I have "web protection" (?!)

Any suggestions? I'm on Win7 64-bit.

Use none. Really, don't use anti-virus. It's a complete waste of cpu processor.

I've managed just fine with only Windows Defender #Tongue You really don't need much protection on a home PC with a cable net connection, as long as you don't open any...questionable websites or e-mails.

I use Avast for a/v and Comodo for firewall... Comodo has the secureDNS function which blocks known malicious urls, and Avast scans a page to block malicious scripts. If you set them up right together they work awesome.... the only downside is false-positives are a pain to get around.

I use my router's firewall. Hardware firewalls are far more effective than software but if you need a software firewall, use Comodo.

For anti-virus, I started using Panda Free. Catches quite a bit and has heuristic analysis so it can possibly catch things that aren't known yet. It's not foolproof so don't click on loltotesnotavirus.exe from thissiteistoteslegit.ru and run it. Otherwise, it's light on resources and offers excellent protection for free and it's fairly well customizable.

Use MBAM for malware. You can run Spybot 2 as well, but MBAM is more than enough.

Nowadays I only use Windows Defender, UAC and common sense (don't run unknown executables, visit suspicious sites etc.) and keep everything up-to-date. I have used Kaspersky for several years before though and was satisfied with its features, performance and customization options for advanced users; it's just rather expensive.

For PCs of family members that are less knowledgeable on what to open/run, I've installed Avast. I've also used Comodo in the past, but I've found both Comodo and Avast too intrusive in use to install them on my own PC.

I am using IOBit Malware Defender instead of any anti viruses, Including advanced system care, So IOBit is even better than avast, You will see why if you have installed it on your PC.

I am revealed that I am not the only one who just uses windows built in "Windows Defender", not that I think I need it...

In fact I am thinking of removing it... Its been taking way to long to clear a download as it is.

Try Tinywall, it uses windows firewall and blocks all by default. You have to give
per app access to net. PrivateFirewall has HIPS components and can specify rules
also. Others like Comodo are a bit heavy.

AV/anti-malware are waste as they don't remove viruses that are a step ahead or
are newer variants of known viruses. Normal scan itself takes several hours when
content goes in TBs. Its also annoying with false-positives.

Better approach is to create a clean OS and take drive backup of it. It takes only a
few minutes to recover the OS back if there is any suspicion. Game progress etc.
has to be backed up separately.

Meh, I guess I'll stick to UAC and Avast antivirus.

I have no firewall, but I guess that if I take care, shit won't happen.
