I think you can fix the shadows for the most part if you flip the images horizontally, and move around the frames as necessary (to account for the changed facings)

That's how i've done with when fixing most of the Civ 3 graphics. The main issue is the models would now be left-handed instead of right-handed. And the shadows aren't much of an issue for me nowadays compared to before but the option to do that is open for anybody.
