Beta Alert: The way RA1 was...(sorta..)
Well,something i felt like discussing..How Red Alert 1 was supposed to be. (sorry smiff,i had to borrow your saying. ),i'll post more stuff when i get around to it. here is a render of what i assume is a Soviet MCV in the Siberian winter. sorry,its the best quality i have. :S
Red Alert Beta stuff is hard to find, and not very good. BTW, that MCV is in a cutscene in Red Alert, not Beta.
In the Beta pics that are around, there's placeholder ore and gems, and no names on the sidebar. There are several units and buildings from TD, such as the SSM laucher, GDI's missile launcher, Nod's turret, and possibly others, . The infantry are smaller, and, if I recall correctly, able to swim. The projectiles had trails.
Of course, in the following shots, Westwood had everything enabled for both sides, and there are many graphical glitches, such as the ore being above the harvester, and some sidebar graphics being incomplete.

Probably. They used a lot of old TD stuff in the beginning. Either because they didn't have the new units done yet, or there was going to be more of a tie-in between them... _________________

1:Somebody should re-create that placeholder ore/gems. looks better then teh crap ingame.
2:I assume that the blue is allies..but why do THEY have the Mammie?
3:Ironic,the SSM,and the TD Flame tank(there is a kick in the ass) are still left over in RA1's files. you can enable them to replace another image with RE98.
4:The submarine looks like a giant sperm whale..
5:boats look MUCH better then what we have in the final game.

2. Maybe Mammoth was intended to be designed by Allies (future GDI) and used by both sides?
Mammoth Tank is at Tech Level 10, so it could be the Allied Wunderwaffe.
I think that they removed Mammoth from Allies for balance reasons. QUICK_EDIT
This was Westwood. The betas were cool an promising, and the released games were weaker. Like Renegade for instance. The pre-release pictures showed a very cool game, and the released game isn't really big deal. The same for Red Alert 2. I found some pre-release stuff on some sites and they look better than the released ones. But what the hell? If this is a modding forum, then why shouldn't we make the games as they had to be? Hmm... I think the reason people haven't made an RA1 beta mod is that pics are hard to find, and some stuff just isn't possible.
projectile trails for instance, and the cameos without text (the cameos don't exist and the current ones can't have the text taken out) and the swimming infantry are completely impossible, as they can't change images based on the ground, only the maps terrain type.
Something to note, they made all the infantry except for the dogs bigger. Originally the dogs were about 1 1/2 times the size of the people!
In my opinion, the placeholder ore looks like absolute crap, I mean, its blurry and has a black background!
By the way, they didn't remove the mammoth tank from Allies for balance reasons, as you can see, every unit and building was buildable by both sides in the beta, even stuff that ended up unbuildable altogether, like the construction yard. This is often done, as it makes testing the game so much easier.

You're right, there is a lot of photoshopping there. It would have been nice to have motion blur on MiGs and the big muzzle effect from all the weapons.
What puzzles me, though, is if it were a photoshopped screenie, why were the pink dots on the PP not removed. _________________

I hate EA, they destroy all good game developing companies that they buy, Bullfrog, Origin, Westwood...
All of them were making great games, and then EA came and just destroyed them . QUICK_EDIT

For starters, look at that giant screenshot of the beta RA2. That was photoshopped together. Lots of prerelease RA2 voxels were smoothed in screenshots to look more crisp than they actually look. Secondly, there have been various TS shots that were doctored, although I can't exactly name any things they did. They did photoshop them, though. _________________
