A small field mouse scuttled across the foggy, deserted street. He stood up on his hind legs and sniffed the air. Several loud explosions lit up the area. Overhead, the squeal of Orca Fighters could be heard, but the dense fog and smoke hid them from view. They faded off to the north, and only the sound of crackling fire broke the silence of New Dallas. New Dallas was set on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It was built on the ruins of the former city of Houston, which fell during the War of 2020. The city once again was deserted. It, like many other cities in the former United States, was destroyed during a clash of military forces. It was an all out civil war, happening all over the world after the Tiber River incident. In 2011, a large meteor struck the planet two miles east of the Tiber River in Italy. It had an unknown substance on it. This substance became known as Tiberium, after the river. Although extremely toxic, it was adept at leeching minerals from the ground, and thus exploited by the power-hungry company then known as Tiber Labs. They used Tiberium (which formed into surface crystals that could easily be harvested, but released toxic spores that were spread like an airborne pathogen) to leech valuable minerals at first in the immediate area.

Tiberium had a unique property; Tiberium could kill or mutate living organisms. In its spore state, the substance would get into the respiratory system, infecting the lungs. Within a few hours, the victim would begin to have coughing fits, spitting up blood. Within a day, the substance would have completely destroyed the respiratory system and the victim would die. However, when the crystals are ground into dust, Tiberium had an extraordinary quality. If a victim were to inhale the dust, he would begin to show early symptoms similar to that of the spore version; however, instead of destroying the respiratory system, it coated it with microscopic plates. Tiberium would attack the lymphatic system spreading throughout the body. The skin would develop crystalline-like structures in particular areas where bone was close to the skin. The nervous system would be left nearly untouched; however, the cerebral cortex was modified on a cellular level. Tiberium would coat the entire spinal cord in a tough but flexible “skin”. The victim would then feel immense pain for several days until the “skin” was completely wrapped around the spine. The mutation then attacked particular areas of the brain, mainly the parts dealing with emotion and reasoning, making the victim rash and unruly. Most of their knowledge would be retained, but their civility would be almost completely eliminated. They fell back on to the base instinct to survive. Those that were infected became known as “Shiners” or "Mutants" to the civilized world, although now there isn’t much left of civilization. These "mutants" eventually banned together and formed their own cultures. They still retained their intelligence, and still tried to stay civilized, however their rash reasoning lead to more and more violence. It all started when Tiber Labs lost control of their test substances. During an experiment that went tragically wrong, tons of spores and Tiberium dust was released into the atmosphere around the meteor. The infected ground began to grow surface crystals, which created more spores that continued to spread like an unstoppable plague. Within the month, thousands were dead and hundreds mutated. Italy was in ruins.

Within a year after the outbreak, most of southern Europe was affected. Many fled the continent to the United States. The United States, after accepting nearly one hundred million refugees, finally closed its borders. Many still flooded in from Canada and Mexico. In April of 2013, armed patrols were placed along the borders to stop the influx of refugees. In early May of that year, Mexico, overflowing with refugees, demanded that the United States reopen its borders. Refusing to help, the US denied entry for anyone not a US citizen. Furious with the actions of the United States, many countries severed all diplomatic relations with them. Mexico was soon joined by Canada in its attempts to reopen the US borders. The United States continued to refuse
Finally, the United States built a 750 mile-long wall along the southern border, armed with guard towers every half-mile. The United States warned that anyone trying to enter would be shot on spot. On the eve of the year 2014, a father and his 15 year old son were killed trying to enter. They were citizens of Mexico, therefore Mexican authorities responded: Either the wall comes down and the borders are reopened, or Mexico would declare war with the United States. The US laughed at the idea, and refused. On January 14th, 2014 Mexico declared war with the United States, followed by Canada. Japan, siding closely with the United States, declared war on Mexico and immediately launched assaults against them. The United States called on the United Kingdom to assist them, but overwhelmed with problems of their own, the UK remained neutral. In July of 2014, two Frenchmen and a German were caught trying to enter the US through Canada, and after a quarrel with authorities, they were killed by US patrols. At this, France and Germany sided with Mexico and Canada. By 2015, the United States, forced into world war, began readying its nuclear arsenal. Japan asked the United States to stand down, or it would break off its alliance. The United States did in public but continued to prepare nuclear strikes behind closed doors.

Russian spy satellites, loaned to Japan, spotted a nuclear missile being loaded into a bay along the southern edge of Texas. At this, Japan broke off relations with the United States and chose to remain neutral for the rest of the conflict. Seeing their chance, France launched a bombing strike on the US at 3:15 am on October 3rd, 2015. They attacked Trident Naval Station in South Carolina, disabling the facility and killing 1,538 soldiers. The United States retaliated. They launched a nuclear warhead for Paris. During mid-flight, the ICBM was intercepted by an orbital-based anti-ballistic missile system that France had put up to protect themselves. Russia, who the leader in Tiberium research at the time, finally showed their colors by siding with France. They loaned France 3 Tiberium warhead systems, but were told to only launch them in dire emergencies.

The world had narrowly avoided nuclear war, but the United States had proven to the world that they would not hesitate to retaliate. On October 9th, a shaky cease-fire was signed. For now, the gunfire had stopped, and the focus was on ridding the world of Tiberium, which had now spread throughout Europe and parts of western Asia. For more than a year, the strained tensions between the United States and Europe lessened, and the US reopened it's borders to 1500 immigrants a year from Mexico and 1000 a year from Canada. During the next two years, however, terrorist strikes increased exponentially. In 2017, a mysterious transmission from Italy was broadcasted worldwide, claiming that all the terrorist attacks were just the beginning of a much bigger "Master Plan". Soon after the transmission, many military installations in Europe and Northern Africa began to "dissapear" or so it seemed. There were no signs of rubble or damage, they just simple weren't there. Spy satellites took snapshots from above only to take pictures of empty grounds. The odd thing was, any scouts sent out didn't come back. Their disappearance, however, fell in the priorities list when Tiberium was found in Brazil in late 2018. The United States, with a change of heart, urged all of Central America to quickly enter the US. Massive refugee camps were set up in Arizona, New Mexico, and southern Texas. They gave them two months to move out, before the walls were reinforced and massive gates were put up at all the entrances. Huge "blowers" built outside the walls blew the spores away from the wall in an attempt to keep Tiberium out of the United States.

Terrorist attacks continued to plague the world, in growing strength. They seemed more militaristic, and more organized. Tactical strikes were made, sometimes destroying entire installations. in November of 2018, another transmission from Italy said that the terrorist attacks were "Assaults on the tyranny of the world" lead by "the Brotherhood of Nod". After the transmission, several sleeper cells assaulted installations within the United States. The United States began to have trouble with its sensor network as well. Fort Jackson, South Carolina went "off the charts" on January 3rd, 2019. Satellite imagery showed only barren lands, and any attempts to approach the base resulted in the loss of the units sent. Worried, the US did a massive thermal and electromagnetic scan of the area. What they found astounded them. The base had grown tenfold, and huge energy signals were found systematically in areas throughout the base. An emergency United Nations session was called on January 17th, and in that meeting, the Global Defense Initiative, or GDI, was born. The multi-national military group rounded up two divisions and by the 9th of February, were ready to take the base back. An electro-magnetic warhead was dropped on the base, disabling all electronics in a 12-mile radius. What they found shocked the world. The large energy signals taken to be underground, were actually massive structures with spherical, glowing mounts. The base had been heavily reinforced. The assault on the base was successful, however, and further investigation found that the Brotherhood of Nod was responsible for the buildup.

In late 2019, the Brotherhood had begun spreading propaganda, as more and more strikes occured within the United States and Canada. There was civil unrest and riot breakouts all through the world. To add to the panic in the US, the Tiberium was creeping ever closer to the border. Mexico City had fallen, and traces of Tiberium spores were found in the northern tip of Australia. Many countries absolved themselves and became part of the Global Defense Initiative, which broke off from the United Nations and became it's own entity. Hearing that, the United States demanded that GDI follow UN sanctions. Unwilling to comply, GDI began to build up forces anywhere they wished. By December 2019, GDI had built nearly 150 bases worldwide, 29 of them within the United States border. Fort Sill, Oklahoma fell to the Brotherhood in January 2020. The United States was now fighting on three fronts. Tiberium, although slowed growth in the desert, still crept farther northwards into the Chihuahuan Desert in Mexico. The Brotherhood continued assaulting the US, although many were unsuccessful, due to the buildup of defenses around the bases. GDI attempted an assault on the captured Fort Sill in May of 2020, but failed. The civil unrest and riots multiplied at the failure. A group of very angry civilians of Houston, Texas, began to attack the GDI base west of their city with anything they could. Approximately 1000 moletov cocktails were thrown at the base, as well as several explosive weapons. The base walls held, but GDI retaliated anyway. They fired on the civilians. The United States goverment warned GDI that if another civilian was harmed, they would retaliate. The entire city, now outraged, broke out in protest and began to attack GDI patrols in the city. GDI pulled all of their units back inside the base peremeter, and then, without warning, leveled the entire city with an offshore naval barrage.

Furious, the United States attempted two bombing runs against the GDI base, but failed. Finally, the US launched several cruise missiles against the base. Although the damage was extensive, the base was still operational. Air units developed by GDI, the Orca series of aircraft, were launched against nearby Fort Hood. The Orca Bombers failed to reach their destination however, because they were intercepted by a wing of XF-55 "Phoenix" fighter jets. Another volley of cruise missiles were launched at the GDI base, as well as three others. Just prior to striking the bases however, the missiles were seemingly disintegrated in midair. GDI then sent a message to the Pentagon, boasting that nothing could penetrate it's "Firestorm Defense". Satellite scans, however, revealed that the "Firestorm" could only stay on for a limited amount of time, for it used massive amounts of energy. Considering that the entire city and lands around the Houston base were deserted, the United States launched a volley of ballistic missiles at the base. The Firestorm went up, and the missiles were stopped, but five minutes later, a nuclear missile struck the base. It was completely destroyed. The United States proved once again that it's Nuclear arsenal would not sit idly in it's bays. After a short 3 month period of fighting GDI, fearing another nuclear strike, ordered all units to return to their bases. The damage had been done, however, and many millions died in the fighting. The US economy was in ruins. Tiberium was growing right up to the border. Traces of spores were found in extreme southern Arizona, however the ground was not rich enough in minerals to boast any growth. The Brotherhood of Nod, quiet during the clash of GDI and the US, resumed attacks on military installations throughout the world.

US Colonal Alexandra Spoor, who would later become GDI's most powerful commander, stated during a broadcast on the eve of 2021, "The outlook for humanity is grim. All we have left now is hope."

"Phoenix Home, this is Sierra One One Seven. We are approaching the target. ETA, Three minutes."
"Roger that, Sierra One One Seven. Good luck."
"Thanks. Sierra Group out."

Lt Colonel Nicolas "Bulldog" Pena was short, stout, and had a determined look upon his brow. He switched over to local command on his radio. "Alright, guys. We're almost there. Watch your intervals." He said, in a calm, steady voice. He looked over to his right, and nudged his wing up and down a bit. His wingman returned the notification, letting him know he was ready. "Radar's picking them up. Spread to combat positions! ETA One minute!" As he said this, the group of twenty two XF-57 "Hawkeye" fighter jets spread out into position. On the horizon, several small black dots were just noticable in the tainted green sky. An alarm beeped in bulldog's cockpit. Missiles had been fired. "Steady..... steadyyy......" he said in a calm voice.

"BREAK!" Bulldog yelled. Each team of Hawkeyes rolled off to avoid the missiles. Bulldog pulled straight up on the stick but thrashed on the reverse thrusters. The rear end dropped like a rock, pulling the rest of the fighter with it. Looking almost straight up, he saw the missile targeting him dart past in front of him, followed closely by a golden-tan Orca Fighter. At this, Bulldog slammed the throttle forward. "GDI thinks they can f*ck with Britain, do they?" He smirked. He literally flipped his Hawkeye over and darted after the Orca. The Orca pilot, concentrating on another Hawkeye, didn't notice Bulldog on his six. "Take some of this, you bloody f*ck!" Bulldog yelled as he pulled the trigger on the stick, sending a volley of 12.7mm, .50 calibre bullets tearing through the Orca. The Orca Pilot tried to pull up, but the rounds hit so hard, so fast that they tore the tail off the craft. The Orca's body spun out of control, slamming into the ground, exploding in a fireball that plumed dozens of meters into the air. The alarm beeped again, so bulldog pushed the Hawkeye to its limit. He pulled back on the stick, sending the fighter skywards. The missile fired at him flew under him, but wasn't finished. It circled back around. Bulldog rolled left and attempted to level out. The missile was coming straight at him. Suddenly it exploded in midair, and another Hawkeye flew perpendicular to bulldog.

"Whooo! Saved your ass AGAIN!" Bulldog heard over the radio. He smiled, "Yeah yeah, lucky shot, Kat," He laughed. "Now how about getting this f*cker off my six, yeah?" He said, commanding once again. "Will do, sir!" said Kat. Bulldog banked left, rolling downwards and losing altitude as he did. Kat banked right from her course, pulling up into the green-tinged sky. "I'm in position." Said Kat over the radio. "Roger." Said bulldog. He abruptly pulled up, flying straight into the sun. He was blind, but so was the Orca on his tail. He heard Kat on the radio. "BREAK! BREAK!" she yelled. He rolled out just in time to avoid a volley of more .50 caliber shells. The rounds tore through the cockpit of the Orca like paper. The pilot was killed instantly. The Orca's port engine exploded, and the craft spiraled out of control, flames pouring from the side. By now, most of the bulky, slow Orca Fighters were torn apart by the nimble Hawkeyes. "Yeah! Take that you bloody f*cks!" yelled bulldog. Just then, several pings could be heard on the outside of his hawkeye. One of the engines let go, blowing off the tail stablizers. The hawkeye began tumble into a lateral spin. The rotational forces began to tear the jet apart. Vibrations shook Bulldog up so much he could hardly think. He reached down to the side of his seat with difficulty. He found what he was looking for, and pulled. The canopy flew off, and his seat rocketed skyward. The parachute deployed, and he was at the wind's mercy. Below him, his XF-57 Hawkeye smashed into the ground, exploding, sending flaming pieces in all directions. He said into his radio, "Phoenix Home, This is Sierra One One seven. I'm down, I'm down. I'm directly under the engagement zone. Send somebody to pick my ass up!" He said, frustrated that he wasn't in the sky, where he belonged. "Roger that, Sierra One One Seven. We'll send a transport."

Bulldog landed with a thud. He unclipped his chute, and walked towards a nearby woodline for cover. He sat down against a tree, pulled out a snack bar, and began to eat it. He hated being on the ground, and this was the second bird he'd lost this year. Both times he was fortunate enough be hit by GDI and not The Brotherhood. Their Scorpion Fighters would tear apart a Hawkeye, which outdid the hawkeye in everthing but raw speed. To take on Scorpions, they would have to call in American YF-94 Talon fighters, which couldn't flat outrun a Scorpion, but could turn well inside one. Bulldog sighed. "Well this is just f*cking great, idnnit?" He asked himself.

Nice story of an alternative Tiberium universe! But just a small question: why do you make the USA the bad guys, while you live in the same country?

Because it's something the USA would do.

plus I needed a powerful nation as an antagonist.

So in essence, you might as well be saying that because EA is an american company they did the right thing by making USA the "Good Guys" in Generals??

Doesn't sound like good reasoning to me.

I say: Why not?

Cause he's from Texas, nobody cares about Texas. Except people who live in Texas. Then they can create their own country.

October 22nd, 2064
Somewhere off the coast of Newfoundland.

"Bulldog, this is Phoenix!"
"Phoenix, it's goot to hear your voice!"
"You too."
"Phoenix, I don't have your transponder on my screens. Where are you?"
"I'm right on your ta-.. BULLDOG PULL UP!"
"The hell-AAAHGH!"

Admiral Alexandra "Phoenix" Spoor awoke with a start. She wiped the sweat off her brow, and pulled her long, brown hair out of her face. She looked at the golden glowing numbers above her door. It was only 5:30 in the morning. Phoenix stood up, her lean but commanding figure imposing a shadow on a picture of her parents. She walked over to a ceramic sink filled with water and splashed her face, looking at herself in the mirror. Phoenix then opened the curtains, looking out to the eastern horizon. The golden-pink horizon gave an ominous feeling to her.

There was a loud boom outside, the dim morning was turned bright for a split second. Another explosion rocked the ship. The overhead lights turned red. "battle stations! This is not a drill!" said EVA over the intercom. Phoenix stood up straight, and grabbed her coat. She zipped it up, and pulled the bulkhead door open, and walking out, slammed it closed again. She ran up three flights of stairs, veered left into a hallway where a fire was spewing from a vent on the wall. A deckman ran past her to put it out. She darted through another bulkhead, and entered the bridge. "Status report!" she yelled instinctively.

"Surpise attack, two submarines. The Valkyrie retaliated with torpedoes and hit them both, but it wasn't enough. The two subs took her out, then dived. No survivors on the Valkyrie. We've detected two more surface ships They're firing on us.. So far, no damage reported from the supply ships." Said her XO.
"Our damage report?" Inquired Phoenix.
"Hull breaches in sectors five, six, and twelve. Bulkheads sealed. Three of ours unaccounted for." said a male officer to her right. Another explosion rocked the ship.
"We've lost port side engines! Rudder damage is extensive." said another officer, next to her.
"Forward batteries are ready for action. Fire-control is online and operational." Said a female officer to Phoenix's left.

Phoenix moved to her command chair and sat in it. It rotated and raised to face the front. She waved her hand and brought up a holographic display. "Fire forward batteries. Move to target the surface ships."

"But ma'am, the submarines may have torpedoes still in their salvo. The supply ships will be open to attack!" said her XO. She glared at him.

"Do as I ask, Colonel. Do not be questioning my orders." Said Phoenix sharply. The colonel hesitated. Phoenix looked at the navigation officer. "Move to assault the surface ships... Now, major."

"Belay that, Major." Said the colonel, "Halt the ship, deploy the sensors, and fire on the submarines with torpedoes." The Major looked at her commanding officers. Lack of sleep was very evident on the Admiral's face. It was making her rash, but Phoenix was the commanding officer, and her orders must be followed.

"Colonel! You WILL follow through with MY orders! DO NOT CONTRADICT ME!" Phoenix yelled, standing up. Her XO stood at attention, facing her.

"Admiral, I cannot, in good conscious, follow your orders. I am hereby relieving you of your duties, under article 18, paragraph 9," Stated the XO, and he then moved closer to her, "Admiral, you're losing it."

"Give me your sidarm." Said Phoenix unblinkingly. The colonal stood there, confused. "NOW!" Phoenix yelled. He unclipped the holster, pulled out his pistol and handed it to Phoenix. She took it and pulled out the clip, observing it. She then reloaded the clip, and put a round in the chamber. Phoenix then abrubtly raised the weapon, and put one 9mm round into the colonel's head. "Insubordination will not be tolerated on my ship." she said, sitting down.

... to be continued.
