ok, I should probably have written a tutorial about this, but it's kinda a pain in the ass to do.

You need:
a .w3d model
GMax
RenX
Another 3d modeling program that can import .obj meshes and export as .3ds (I use anim8or).

So once you have GMax with the RenX plugin all set up, you can import the .w3d model. From there, you'll have to track down a script for GMax that can make it export .obj. Finally, fire up your other 3d program, import the .obj, and then export it as a .3ds

Where can I find an OBJ exporter script? I've downloaded one, but it won't work....

or, if you happen to have 3ds max, you just look for a w3d importer for max (there a small number of them) and then you can simply export them as 3DS

Stygs I do have 3DS Max.
I found a W3D Importer. How do I use it?
There's no readme nor do I know much of the 3DS Max interface.

Extract the file and move the W3D_CC-imp-V1.16.ms into the "Scrips" folder inside the 3ds max folder.

Then start 3ds max, click on the hammer icon in the top left corner, select MAXScript, click on Run Script and choose W3D_CC-imp-V1.16.ms.
Then choose "wd3 importer" from the utillies pulldown menu.

The rest should be pretty simple.
