The w3d viewer would probably help with viewing the w3d files...

BTW, w3d stands for "Westwood 3D", they're the Generals format for vehicles, infantry and buildings

Theres a renegade mod sdk out there somewhere that has a w3d viewer in it; that is basically exactly what you want.

You can also get GMax, the RenX plugin, and find a w3d importer script if you wish to edit the models.

If the model and texture are in the same directory then I believe that Gmax shows the texture. But I haven't got to the point at which I can texture, so I don't know.

It works in RenX. You are using RenX, correct?

I would recommend W3D Viewer,it's what I use to look at the models, and it works excelent!
Just make sure that you make folder Art and in it create folders W3D and Textures. Now,just put all texture files(dds,tga...) into Textures folder, and all W3D files into W3D folder, then drag the whole Art folder into W3D Viewer and you can look through all the models with their skins.
Here you can download it:

Cheers!
