It recently came to my attention after a random reading of Wikipedia, that an alternative version of Generals was released in Germany that turned all the infantry units into cyborgs. If this is true in that the actual art work was changed and not just the names of the units, can some post an example of what these cyborgs look like (and perhaps the skins to...)?

Nothing much about it really, just robot-ized cameos and a barrel on wheels as the Terrorist.

they hanged the infantry into cyborgs in every gam, even in tiberian dawn, and tiberian sun, the only difference was that infantry lose black oil instead of blood.

and in TS they said ridiculous things like "i lose servo oil" in battles.

lol, barrel on wheels.

Surely they don't believe that cyborgifying everything helps? Must have played merry hell with the Firestorm storyline too...

It even conflicted with the normal cyborg Rolling Eyes
EVA says, that you have to build some cyborgs in the first mission - I mean WTF?!? xD

It makes me wonder how they censor things like Age of Empires.

AoE isn't censored IIRC.
They mainly censor things which play in todays warfare with real humans that kill each other were you see them crippled and bleeding on the ground.
Medieval stuff seems to be not that problematic as it is long ago. Confused

What exactly are the criterias is unknown to me.
Pure arbitrariness if you ask me and completely stupid. Instead of censoring they simply shouldn't sell it to persons under 18 years.

Lol at that video, those Generals havebeen made completely horrible. So ig uess besides the terrorists, no changes were made to any of the models? They just cyborgified cameos, but not infantry skins (well, I guess they'd be lazy like that).

I wonder why they removed a star from the generals Confused.
Anyway, I'm quite glad that my country barely bothers with censuring stuff.

Mine neither.
Though really, if anyone wanted real, uncensored games in Germany then they'd be able to get them, am I correct in assuming?

of course.
1. you can still buy them online (though then you have to live with the english language)
2. some games even have a second uncensored version which you can buy if you ask the salesman and show your ID card.
3. the internet offers to all german censored games "blood patches" for free (was one of the first things I did with all my C&C games)

Personally I could live with that, if I ever had to. Though I already buy my games in English, even if there's a Spanish version, since those tend to suck by having horrible voice acting (I'm looking at you Starcraft and Warcraft 2).

oooh....the orange box i bought in germany..i could tell stories....

suprisingly starcraft and diablo games on one hand were sold completely uncensored and those are WAY more brutal than 5 pixel big infantry with blood with the size of 2 pixels.

The german syncronization is actually a quite good one. They not only try to find persons with similar voices and add special effects, but also try to make it lip-sync. Though there are as always exceptions. (like calling in stargate atlantis engl. "wraith" in german "race" Confused , i guess they think germans have a problem with the "th")

@blubb:
well these two are fictional (sci-fi and fantasy), while C&C still has the connection to reality, thus starcraft and diablo aren't censored and C&C is.

but what do you mean with orange box? Please tell the story. Smile

You think this is bad? Wolfenstein 3D for the SNES removed all of the Nazi references and had you fighting people and rats.

In my opinion, game localization isn't really a good idea as it eliminates people an easy way to learn the global language of the 21st century (you know what I mean). Heck, how do you think I learned the basics of the language well before going to high school? I even still have trouble learning the second official language in our country.

My point is, that hearing and seeing a foreign language in the media greatly helps in learning to use that language.

This.

Playing Modern Warfare 1 and 2 with the Russians actually..speaking Russian, really helped immerse the experience. Hearing them yelling to take cover, or about throwing grenades in their native language rather then some half-assed,poorly accented 'Russian' was awesome. Even the Germans in the older Call of Duty games were pretty cool. You could understand what they were saying if you paid attention to the AI, and what it said.

Granted, 'throwing stun grenade' might not be the mot useful or wise thing to walk around saying in Berlin, but it DOES provide exposure to the language nonetheless. Meine Leiben!

Censorship is really simple in New Zealand, as far as I can tell. Things have to be pretty bad to be totally banned, and if they aren't banned then you can probably buy them, within the usual censors rating.
The Mad Max game was only legalized a few years ago. Other than that there are only a few exceptions to the rule.

Red Alert 1 and Tiberium Wars are also censored in germany (but TW's Kane Edition isn't). In RA1, there are also cyborgs with oil. In TW, there are bomb specialists who run away instead of fanatics and the atomic missile is called auroramissile.

But censoring games is useless in my opinion, because we make it uncensored again ourselves.

There are uncut patches for Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun and Generals made by people like Zimbio81 and Nyerguds. I also made one for Tiberian Sun together with Nyerguds a few months ago. (it's the one which uncuts the videos)

Aside Red Alert 2 all other cncs are poorly localized here in germany, so nearly anyone is playing the english versions anyway ^^
(TS Videos were ok apart from some curious things like naming the Black Hand to "Faust von Nod" (Fist of Nod)
Generals was ok, but the cencored version was just stupid with the renamings, also in the German uncencored Generals the Battlemaster Tank was named "Faust Maos" (Mao's Fist) that was really nice
TW/KW and RA3 have some serious naming issues as some names seem to just copied out of some dictionary, they sound just ridiculous)

I thought the censorship of C&C is one of the most funniest things in
the history of videogames...

In my community everyone says that the censorship of C&C is cult.

But to be fair: The people how censored this has improved their skills. If i
look at Tiberian Dawns cameos.... Very Happy
With a "Geheim"-bar on the faces of the westwood-developers Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

funniest ever, as i said Very Happy

Well, I doubt "nearly everyone" is playing the english version Wink

But to be honest, the translation for TD might have been censored, but it kicked ass! Why? Because a lot of (Nod) units got some kind of nicknames (similiar to the devils tounge from TS) - this really added to the feeling of Nod beeing more than just a regular army (the "Nod-Mot" name for the attack bike was even used in TS,TW (and probaply TT)).
It also seems like they reduced the censorship for the windows release, since it had the normal icons for infantry.

TW also had a good translation (they keept a lot of english names), but they suddenly translated most of the new KW names into german, creating a nice mess... (Mastermind vs Wunderkind), not to mention that both shatterer versions got the same name >_>
