Mapping limit Question.
Subject description: possibilities, possibilities.
I was thinking...
Would it be possible to create very large, realistic cities in generals? Meaning can the engine handle it and would it be viable to play without needing a super computer?
When I mean realistc I mean the entire map being filled with buildings, 100's of cars, walls, sign boards, trees, lights civilians etc etc.... and then the faction units too.
Also this is assuming the models are made of slightly more polies and higher res textures (slightly).
You think it's worth it? Last edited by L()KI on Sun Jan 30, 2011 9:07 pm; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
I'd say no to both parts of the question.
Considering the fact that Gens seems to lag a bit when there are too many fences on the map, then adding in all the buildings, cars, trees, signage, lights, and civilians... and then the faction units, and then considering the textures, it's a pretty big ask from most computers, afaik. QUICK_EDIT
Hmm...
Well, think about the average fence in Generals. At minimum, it's got about 6-10 tris. Now, think about how many of these 6-10 tri objects you've got on a realistic city map.
I remember a mapping topic which touched on this a little ways back:
http://ppmsite.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21889
Apparently the fences lag things because they use transparency, and (though I haven't actually tested it myself) there's mention of an internal object limit.
I'm going here off my own personal mapping and the tidbits of info in that thread, so don't consider me a reliable source as I've only got my 3 year old PC to base my findings on. QUICK_EDIT
It's not about the graphics part, that would be fine. The engine has problems with keeping up with a high object count. And as SAGE isn't optimized to use anything of a Multi Core like SupCom so it won't work. _________________ QUICK_EDIT
Then learn how to hack the engine, no one will be able to tell you how. Also, label your goddamn topics so the Generals forum isn't filled "Another question" topics. Take the effort to name the thread 'Question in regards to object limit on map".
Why don't you just keep adding stuff until it crashes? experimenting will give you the best results. The biggest problem I find with a ton of objects is the ai controlling them, as pathfinding in generals is horrible moving alot of objects causes epic lag. But non moving buildings? shouldn't be too bad. Take a look at the campaign maps also, as they are more intricately designed than the MP maps. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
Hmm.. But it says:
"Modern Warfare
C&C Generals: Zero Hour mod | TBD"
..Eh, can't be bothered checking further. It looks pretty run-of-the-mill. QUICK_EDIT
It is Generals, seems to abuse partially implemented calls to run his own stuff. The Command Bar is bloomed because he applies the bloom after its rendered on the scene not before - the remade water looks nice tho, even its also just abusing whats already there and rewriting some bits. All that could also be accomplished by dll injection. _________________ QUICK_EDIT
My main goal is to have smooth gameplay with the polies I make my units with now, which are on the limit of the amount rexcomended. Also some higher res textures and the higher number of stuff in-game.
So yeah... Not anything drastic like that modern warfare mod. QUICK_EDIT
