If 3ds max runs on Mac, use that.

Uh, 3ds Max will work on Mac. I was just using it on a MacBook last week. They have Mac native 3dsMax.

It would have been running via boot camp which is a dual partition program allowing u to run windows on mac hardware(which is essentially PC hardware too)

3ds max does not run natively on any version of OS X

That was it. Couldn't remember exactly how. I suppose without BootCamp 3dsMax is outta the picture.

3dsmax

the guy said something freeware, not anything else, if gmax would run on mac, I'd go for that one until I get 3dsmax.

Wings3D was/is really good for learning about subdivision and extrusion modelling. Not sure whether you can get it for OSX, but it's open source, so there's a good likelihood.

your best bet would be to choose one of these.

Windows/Mac:

3dsMax
Blender
Cinema4d
LightWave3d
Maya

Mac Exclusive:

Cheetah3d

I suggest not using sketchup. It's just bad.

You probably don't want to try Blender until you have a bit of clue about the general mechanics and practises of 3D modelling, imo anyway.
