I was wondering... does/will OpenRA do away with theaters so you can make a map with snowy-capped mountains in the desert?

OpenRA still uses theaters & each is limited to a single pal. I hope in the future they will add the ability to use multiple pals within each theaters, as I too want to make more diverse looking maps.

I didn't look too deeply into the yaml files yet, but does anyone know whether there a place that specifies how the building shp files are named - such that the game will attempt to load gtpile for temperate and gapile for snow?

The sprite name mangling is enabled (for any sequence - not just building artwork) by defining `UseTilesetCode: true` on the sequence definition.  There is also a `UseTilesetExtension: true` for appending a tileset-specific extension to the filename.  The replacement values for each tileset are defined in mod.yaml

These tags and the logic behind them is implemented in the `DefaultSpriteSequence` sequence loader that is used by the TD/RA/TS mods.  D2K uses its own sequence loader with different behaviour, and your own mods can do whatever they want if you write your own sequence loader class (this is in mod-level code).

Might as well just have it read a TIFF since it is layered and can read from it's palette instead of needing multiple palettes. Example code
