Hi!

My Linux-loving friend tried running DTA via Wine.

This seems rather buggy.
Installation of Windows Media Player did not really solve the problem.
In case you are interested in the client being cross-platform, you perhaps would want to check out OpenAL.

As a hacky fix, perhaps a command-line switch to disable all sounds in client will do until we figure what exactly went wrong?

A command-line switch does exist. In the Resources directory, try running clientxna.exe or clientdx.exe with -NOAUDIO and see if it works.

You can also try removing MainMenuTheme.xnb and MainMenuTheme.wma from the Resources\ folder and the Resources\Classic Theme\ folder.

Note that "officially" I currently only support Windows, so you're kind-of on your own if you encounter problems trying to use DirectX. There is a version of MonoGame that uses OpenGL, but I'm not sure how well it'd handle the client on Linux. Dkeeton of CnCNet tested it back in July and it worked well according to him, but since then I've done a lot of changes to the client so there's a high chance that it wouldn't work as well anymore, which is why we've included no OpenGL build of the client in DTA 1.15.

Maybe you'd be interested in testing it?

Which version of .NET the client uses atm? Because installing 4.0 alone wasn't enough - trying to confirm the report here.

Update: I cannot test this. Winetricks requires all the previous .NET versions installed for .NEt 4.5 and the 3.0 installer crashes on my system. >_>

The client uses the full version of .NET 4.0.

Does it also needs XNA 4.0? Because if yes, then it needs .NET 4.5 due to XNA and not 4.0, which would pretty much explain why it throws me a wrong .NET version if I start from clean wineprefixes with only 4.0 installed on top of it.

XNA 4.0 uses .NET 4.0. .NET 4.5 is never needed for the client.

Depending on OS the client either needs or doesn't need XNA 4.0. On XP the client needs XNA 4.0, on Vista and newer it uses MonoGame with SharpDX (DX11).

They're wrong. .NET Framework 4.5 doesn't work on Windows XP, and I've personally developed XNA 4.0 games on XP. We've also made sure that the latest client runs on XP.

Well, I've put two days of mine into this and the best I could get is a nice "Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application." message.

I give up.

We'll likely include an OpenGL build of the client in DTA at some point in the near-ish future (within this year), which won't need XNA and should be easier to run with Wine. At least based on dkeeton's testing results some time ago.

My friend tested it as it is on linux, and said, "Too damn slow". Literally a TBS in place of an RTS, with around 4 or 5 frames per second. Tiberian sun itself, by the way, is running fine, he says.

I'll try to get a more detailed report out of him later...

Have him try out the different renderers. If Tiberian Sun itself runs fine, the 'Default' renderer should likely work well.

He tried all available renderers, not a single one gave reasonable performance. He launched it using Wine, launcher started without sound, I'll post his logs later.
