Subject description: Supporting commanders - what is their function?
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Greetings developers,

The famous mission 16: Eagles Fall is masterfully built; big map, lots of various terrains and a monstrously hard objective. One of my favorite missions ever! Shame it had to be added on the scrap list due to the framerate drop.

My question is: what is the aimed function of the Nod reinforcements coming from the North East- and West after you captured the destroyed Nod? They surely do give the player the feeling he's getting a massive support, resulting in almost ego-petting euphoria. (At least for me Laughing )

It seems that they haven't done much aside of destroying the GDI bases that initially resided in their directions. Does this have a function? I'm not sure.

Looking forward to your answer,

Yours faithfully,

Demo

They are just that - support bases. Once they've destroyed the two GDI bases and deployed their own, they start to aid in the attack to the main GDI base until the mission is completed.

Thanks for the clear answer. Apparently, I have been overthinking too much about it! On a side note; the same question applies to the Old Brotherhood base for mission 14: Compulsions; what is the purpose of the base and what does it do throughout the mission? Just defend itself and occasionally blindly throw forces at the gates of the GDI base?

They're there so that you can show them the notes recovered from the abandoned temple, seeing proof of Kane's experiments with cybernetics would bring an end to the infighting.

But what about their in-game purposes? On a side note; it's a little odd they haven't tried to recover their "proof" that cybernetics is not Kane's legacy from their temple despite having a stronghold directly next to it. Even some followers would probably have doubts about their faith and could find it out for themselves. Is there an explanation for it?

They are not really successful in defending themselves though. Last time I played this mission in 0.6.4 the only thing I've managed to defend is a reactor and a SAM silo, because a group of Railguns supported by Goliaths just marched through the base with little resistance. Here's a suggestion: add a capturable construction outpost near the NB base, and make this outpost change ownership to NB (or be destroyed by GDI) on all difficulties but Normal (Easy). This will change nothing for those who want a challenge (and thus play on Hard and Twisted), but those who play on Easy will be able to set up a base there to protect the remains of NB base.

Or you can simply place the outpost close to that hill with GDI mortar troopers, so the player will have to clear the area first, and it will be his reward. Really, it is difficult to defend that base if you're playing it first time and don't have much experience, and ability to defend the base with your own defences will make the mission more beginner-friendly.

Maybe have an Infector and some Exosuits guarding the main gate of the New Brotherhood Base in Compulsions

Maybe the next GloboTech Mission should have them defending against a NOD onslaught and being forced to retreat (Should have expected that would you support badly beaten Rebels and sided against the most powerful Nation in the world)

Is a Chase Mission viable with the TS/TI Engine?

Perhaps have GloboTech and GDI hunt for the Infector in Mutant Territory

The Mutants are hostile to both the Alliance and NOD

GloboTech Exosuits and Tanks run after the Infector (Supported by Drones)

GDI Sniper is needed to kill the Infector

Can't you bring your MCV into the NB base for this mission?  As I recall I built directly in the east side of the NB base to help hold the line, but that was in a previous version.

You can bring it there, but aren't you supposed to deploy the MCV where the GDI base was? Usually I don't destroy that base and keep the conyard alive, then I deploy my MCV and capture both technologies. Railgun Commando helps a lot in defending the NB base (this guy is damn invincible).
