Game programming isn't really a well-paying course, IF you get in. It's low pay, long hours and the crunch time before a game release is a soul-draining experience. To get to game design, you need to be in the industry for a long time (you can't just jump there). You probably stand a better chance of doing well if you do graphical design. You can do a fair few things there (i.e. concept art, texture work, interface creation, things like that) and, if working in the games industry isn't your thing, then there's possiblities outside.
For all you budding programmers, though, you need a good knowledge of maths. To get a degree at university, that is what they most look out for (and not IT courses). Also, if you don't particularly enjoy it then there isn't much room for career change, so you'd be best just sticking it out until a better job actually comes along.
I personally did consider applying for a programming course at university, but decided that I'm hopeless at coding as it is (with the exclusion of HTML) and chose a Masters degree in Physics and Astrophysics instead. _________________

personaly i think i would but not as a full time job, more like part time.the fact that you have to pay alot for going into graphic desighn class and you can hardly have enough work to keeps the job going.
so at the same time, yes and no.............................. _________________ QUICK_EDIT
Well I always wanted to work in the gaming industry, but I'm still undecided what to do: art and design or programing. I'm a complete newbie in both categories, but I think I'll stick to 3D graphics because it's cool to make your imagination come to life (on the display of course), rather than typing a bunch o words and numbers just to make a program.
