Stuff like this happens to me a lot. If all else fails you can take out the mod files and maps in a separate folder then reinstall the game. This may not sound wonderful but it works.

when you load a skirmish btw does the internal error pop up or when loading up does it just stop what its doing?

no, i just click on the skimish in the main menu, I took out all the maps, mods, ect, and it still is doing this. :'(
