Subject description: Dropexp and Dirtexpl?
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Few weeks ago, while surfing on TIBSUN mix, I noticed how the two unused animations, most likely some sort of explosions, DIRTEXPL and DROPEXP shared the same body of colour. Both apparently shared the same colour palette that no longer exists, because they don't fit correctly to any existing TS palette. Many mods use them as Tiberium explosions, but I believe they are something else. Here's what I think they are:

1. Dropexp. This must be connected to the Drop-pods, notice the part "Drop" in the beginning of the filename. The animation itself looks like a large explosion on a ground. I think this was supposed to be the crash animation of the pods.

2. Dirtexpl. Judging by the name again, this must have been another dirt explosion on the ground, perhaps used with Disc grenades? Even if this was going to be a Tiberium Explosion, shouldn't the smoke (or flying dirt) be green, black or brown? Also, if this animation is enabled ingame, in a weapon for example, it is used together with a strange sound, named "expdirt1", which is described as dirt explosion sound too.

What do you think? What is the origin of these two animations? There are more of these, like the alone light infanty dying animation, that doesn't fit to any palette (the blood is not red in any of the TS palettes, and the soldier looks messed up).

Discussion is open.

This is a shot of both explosions in the ANIM. pal. See how they both have greyish smoke/explosion, and the DIRTEXPL shares a unique green explosion in the middle.

Dropexp is a mix of podring and h2o_exp1,
Thats why i think this is the anim for the case if Droppods accidentally land in water.

For Dirtexp i have no idea. Maybe if Droppods land in a Tiberium field?

Well the infdie thing is just the death animation of the infamous Rifle Infantry from the betas. Compair it to the Chemical Trooper's death animation and see what I mean.(Who, also has teal blood...)

Yeah, I noticed that too, the death anim is exactly the death of the weedguy, but with some strange palette.

@LKO: Now that you mention it...it is somekind of weird fusion of the two animations...but if it was in water...there should be a palette that makes it look blue...if the same palette was used with DIRTEXPL, the grey smoke would turn blue too...and if they share the same palette....was DIRTEXPL used for water explosions? Hmm...seems unlikely, because there should be splashing water...unless it was used together with the "h2o" animations...

None of the water anims are blue though, just different shades of grey. Also, it's interesting that its water-based. Dpop-pods can't land on water, maybe they could in beta TS... that would be a nice feature too... if a bit suicidal for the infantry...

I have tried ingame years ago. if you tell drop pods to hit water they hit the nearest piece of land. Dirt explosion is for the Sub apc and subtank when they burrow underground. drop explosion Was probably going to be if the pods collided with a structure or a cliff which is possible.

It depends on the weapon. When I gave the vulcan2 (the Drop Pod primary weapon) much more damage than it has now, the pods landed where buildings were, damaging them, but not destroying them. Unfortunately the infantry died inside the building. But they can't land on cliffs.

No, that is the dig animation.

No I mean, the dirtexpl is not the burrowing animation, "DIG.shp" is.
