I was just talking with sane about different vxling techniques and i came up with a cool idea. What if there was a competition where one crappy, colourless vxl was provided and anyone who wants to participate grabs a copy and with their best vxling techniques makes a masterpiece. Your pretty much pitting your techniques against those of other vxlers and seeing what comes out of it, all for fun i might add. This is a way to see what you can do and im sure there will be some spectacular voxels comming out of this. What is everyones thoughts. If this gets enough people behind it well need some judges. Also the first one should be dedicated to Xeno.

so...it would basically be a tutorial on our own voxelling technique, as well as a submission of the example - voxel itself?

I'm in!

yeah technically, plus it allows you to be creative with the featured unit. you could add any amount of detail you want as well as edit how you want as long as it resembles the origional vxl in some way. Its completely up to the artist to what they want to do, with the only limitation being the starting voxel.

Sound great! But wich wich voxel shall be the base? It needs to bee very very simple, but with some good shapes. BTW, Can the carvans be resized? What will the base include? beltz nis a very personal thing, and the shape of the hull as vell Embarassed I find it hard to imagin a good base voxel, but I'll check it out :p
I need sometinh to do #Tongue

I would think a rectangular base would be fine, because it could morph almost anything.

Aww thanks for the thought of dedicating it to me. I personally couldn't actually really be able to contribute but this whole idea is good... PPM needs a competition or something... hell why not have a Cameo only one? Very Happy

You know, I kinda think this is the kind of voxel that is needed. But I would prefer a tank. A great voxel to make as a base! (Tested it) I would LOVE to "fix" a tank like that! or a plane, or a boat! (but i prefer tanks #Tongue)

Pretty much. I have picked out the first voxel for the competition. It will need a shitload of work but its perfect for this comp. I think it was made from a model and i found it in the depths of voxel library 2. Its a bradly and i think it will turn out great. What does everyone think about it.

@Xeno - You know thats actually a pretty good idea, so much creativity can be put in cameos and they have alot of potential.

@Bos 187 - Hey thats a bloody good first attempt at making a voxel, keep the work up and you could produce great voxels.

@Dupl3xxx - Yup you can do what ever you want to it - Resize it, do what ever scheme you want to it etc. Though it should be simillar is shape to the origional vxl so that pple can relate to each one from the origional. Also this is a technique comp as well so you probably want to keep it around the size it is so that it could be seen in great detail. Thats why i think a bigger voxel like the one below would be a good starting point.

This comp is voxel pimpage to the max lol, have fun. I think we need afew judges and how does a months time frame sound. plus we need an official starting date, and we also need to get the word out about this so people who are interested who dont know about it yet find out about it before it starts.

Well i have a smaller sized RA2 one, but detail will be harder to see. Who wants a smaller one. Well i could normalise it for everyone but thats not the point lol. But this is a challenging vxl and i too would be interested on how they turn out. This is a techniques comp after all. I've just started working on it myself and it is a difficult and time consuming one but the results will be spectacular. I will make the smaller one available for download if people wish to use that one instead.

That looks way better, but it is very "complex" perhaps more like Bos187 first voxel? I don't know, but we need a very simple voxel. "Work so far" looks to good Laughing I'm sorry, but it does Embarassed

If you're talking about my voxel, no problem for bashing it.. I also think it sucks big time, especialy compared to my second voxel Wink

Well this is the complexity of the voxel that should be used, this is no walk in the park. I think the boat is way too simple, I want to compete with real vxlers on really tough voxels. So any high end vxlers interested please contact me. Its all about your technique plus its something fun lol, well not the vxl though. But i hope pple will take me up on this because this is one of the more complex vxls i have and i know the results will be incredible.

@Dupl3xxx - Thanks for the comment on my work so far but its not a good idea to suggest its too good just yet when its only been autonormailsed and the front plane has had only 20% hand normalisation as well as having the turret being removed. Rather minour changes at the moment, though now i have the fromt done, both sides and the left top angulated plane completely normalised.

Your second voxel... It needs work as well Laughing A good second atempt! But let me get this straight:

1. I eneter comp

2. I dl the voxel

3. I fix it

4. Deadline gets moved

5. winner anounced

==========

Rules:

Use the selected voxel to make a betterlooking version. Resize it, skin it, add stuff/detail to it, do some more, post.

==========

Problem, What if I get psycotick and make a new tank "outside" of the original tank? What wil the effect of that be? After all, then I would have used the original voxel as base Confused

Lol yeah they both need work though there not mine, there pulled directly out of voxel library 2. They have been converted fron 3d models and i decided to pick these particular ones because of their advanced requirements and skills to effectively voxel them.

A solution to the problem you have announced is that it should be restricted to starting off with these voxels, but you can modify them to however you like and to the best of your abillities. This comp also focuses on your techniques and skills and like i keep saying i look forward to seeing exceptional results. Also next time around some one else can choose a voxel equally as challenging as the ones i have picked.

Well you cant just designate judges. The first one is dedicated to Xeno but if he wants to judge he's more than welcome to. But i think well need acouple of judges and try and get the word out about this as quickly as possible to all who would be interested in something like this. And good luck pple.

If you pick a clean simple voxel and wait until the VXLSEIII normals palette bug is fixed, I'd enter.
As it is, I can't normal, so half the tecniques out the window, and if you want something tricky people will be less likely to enter and find it harder to show off.
If you want to see something great, give something decent to work with, and allow for methods of improvement.

Of course, if not I'd still be willing to judge, I just wouldn't be entering. I like the ideas here Wink

Well i guess you wont be entering then, theres a reason for making it a hard vxl. The rewards will be great as well. Theres no reason to wait for updates and use a "clean simple" voxel because that isnt real voxeling and you use practically no techniques. Everyones different in what they do, how they do it and their creativity. Do you see my point. Ive seen some of your work as you know and i think you should be able to handle it. BTW it only looks complicated at first sight. This is also about development of your personal vxl techniques and normals are relativly easy once you get the gist.
