My poor Tiberian Sun, it has some kind of sickness.
It is really slow, and I'm not exaggerating there: I have a 3.0Ghz processor and 1Gb of ram, yet it takes the game forever to load. When there are alot of pretty explosions on the screen it slows down.

At first I though that the CDs were damaged, them being almost 10 years old and all, but than something creepy started happening: When I have a building in construction, the game itself experiences lag worse than anything I've seen. There is actually a few seconds delay between my orders and the reaction.
Now it doesn't happen when I build units, only when there is a building in construction.

Worth noting:
- I tried reinstalling to no avail
- I played around with game resolution
- When I play on Judeau's MicroTS or TSD it works fine without any lag

Can anyone save my poor TS? Crying or Very sad

Its not worth saving. Not at all. Smile

Does MicroTS use a different EXE then normal SUN? I know TSD does, perhaps it is something wrong with the Tiberian Sun exes.

TS has always had a construction lag, tis one of the reasons I normally avoid TS.

I know that if you set Transparent=no on the animations, that'll help the lag.

And loads of extra maps without being written to a missions.pkt (IIRC that is the file) will cause the game to take forever to load.

wait, is judeau's micro TS just a modified game.exe?

I mean, I don't want to change gameplay or unit bounds... just reduce the lag. Mine lags during construction as well (although not near as bad Style is experiencing) [then again, my discs are newer]

Thing is, this kind of retarded behavior did not occur years ago. Tiberian Sun was pretty smooth up until 6 months ago. I'll post a video of the lagzors

Also; MicroTS has a no-cd on it, thus a different EXE.

Post video, might help.

And you sure you don't have anything eating up CPU usage in the background? I've had games lag before due to something not closing right.

I experience this with RA2 when running without a CD.

Your cd is probably going bad. They can only be used fo so long before they simply don't work.

Err? CD's have live spans? My mum has some CD's from the 80's that will work perfect.

Its true that No CD hacks slow the game down, reason i dont know, but i would say because they only tell the game to not look at the CD and look at the current directory, so it still goes though all of the CD loading routines.

But saying that, my TS runs really fast with a No CD.

Also check filenames in the directory, MPR can slow the game down quite a bit.

Have you changed any hardware or software configurations as of late?

Have you messed around with the Res or game options?

CDs do have life spans, I read in a magazine CDs last 25ish years and hard drives will last about 100. Do you have firestorm installed?

yeah you can only use them for a certain amount of time before they just don't work. Its actually not so much how long you use them but rather how often you use them. Eventually the laser which reads the disks ironically makes the CD unreadable.

CDs do have lifespans, they also cease to work or begin to act retarded when you don't use them for a log time, for a year or more (happened a couple of times).

I'm not at home right now so I cant post the the video at the moment.

@DaFool: I do have firestorm installed.

dude... CDs wear down after much use... if you keep them in the case and away from things that scratch the living hell out of them, they'll last for a looong ztyping time. Dont' know what the hell you're smoking but it's messing with you dude.

Also, try putting the screen res down to the highest original setting (80x600x16)

Changing Resolution - Doesn't work
Deleting everything that's not supposed to be in Sun directory - Doesn't work
Reinstalling (again) - Doesn't work
Replacing my Game.exe with another one - Doesn't work

How do I make videos play normally on Camtasia? So they won't skip frames?

I'm telling you its either the CD (mostlikly) or your PC has something conflicting on it. For the camtasia thing either change the refresh rate on your monitor or use a different program.

Its called Disk Rot, and that happens over a longer period of time of non-use.

Does Red Alert 2 work? Since the two are almost identical, if the RA2 doesn't work also it's you comp. If RA2 does work, it's the TS disk.

You can also try this:

1) hit ctrl+shift+esc
Task manager will pop up
2) look at the bottom of the window to cpu ussage; if it is at or around 0% your fine, if it as 100% (withOUT you running the game) then thats your problem.
3) Find the program that is using the most cpu, make a shortcut for it on the desktp, and shut it down. (For me, windows explorer uses 99% for some reason).
4) Start up your game and your comp will have dedicated all the cpu to your game, so it should run fast.
5)when you finish playing, get task manager back up and hit new task, then open up the program you shut down.

You know that explorer.exe is not IE, right?
Turning it off... shuts down some quite vital for the computer's well being and mental sanity.

Nothing works so far. The only option I seem to have left is to download a pirated version to replace my CDs.

It does not, shutting down explorer.exe will merely disable the majority of your windows OS, like the desktop. Its actually a good way of deleting those files that for some reason have become 'undeletable', try it now. You can ctrl+alt+del, click new task in the applications tab and run explorer.exe to bring it back again afterwards.

Or buy new ones? You can get them pretty damn cheap on Ebay.

You have "Bloated Windows Syndrome". We'll call it BWiS for short.

After a certain amount of time, installing/uninstalling/reinstalling programs and games, the registry becomes highly corrupt. Arikado has experienced this, and so have I. Arikado had Yuri's Revenge taking forever to load or even play at all. He recently formatted his machine and now Yuri's Revenge runs just fine.

The slow downs usually have to do with some Windows Updates and the game's CD protection conflicting. Though this is not always the case, because I had the same problem with YR, but after some time it simply went away.

If you format and install a fresh copy of Windows. TS should return to a normal working order.

@Tratos: Shutting Down explorer has produced problems for me, granted a restart fixed them. But most of the programs I consider vital were not working while others were slow.

@IcySon55: I'm not sure reformatting will fix the problem since I periodically reformat my PC. Infact, last time I installed TS was a few weeks after reformat (half a year ago-ish)
