Are there other ways to do it other than manually drawing every single frame in the case of RA2 or TS infantry? I know some people use 3d programs... what 3d programs?

most use industry software like 3dsmax or maya.* pricey though..

but there are freeware programs or shareware demo programs. like Blender, Gmax. Anim8tor...etc.

you'll also need some image manipluation program like Photoshop. or Paint Shop pro...Flash/Fireworks.* but there are freeware programs aswell like GIMP.

*"Might find some older version cheaper since Adobe bought out Flash. same goes for Maya which got bought out by Autodesk, company that developed 3dsmax. and released CS3 and the new Maya.

Flyby made some scripts on converting in 3dsmax.

I use Cinema4D, when it's possible, because Cinema4D is more intuitive and there's also texture paint inside. And Maxon created freeware version of Cinema 4D R6 (max render 600x400 pixel). Wink

Related Question: How do I convert models from 3ds to shp? (Besides the obvious screenshot->paint way).

Search yielded nothing =(

You render a sequence and then use image sequence editing tools to apply pallet and do any colour adjust/replace functions you need to do, as well as converting to a format that either shp builder or XCC can understand. From there you convert to .shp. I've used both 3DSMax and Blender and have created a file with the correct camera position and what I think is fairly accurate lighting.

Using Flyby's scripts is the fastest way to convert.

There's topic about that with a download of my RA2 version of Flyby's script (some fixes like RA2 shadows instead of TS ones or 400 frames instead of 100):

You still need to do some cleanup after using that script though, particularly after pallet application and you get some remap that ends up in the wrong red sequence and cleaning up fullbright pixels.
