the computer I use for all my modding has all of a sudden stopped working. It will turn on, go to the screen where you choose the OS, and once you choose the OS (either windows XP or windows) the screen will show the windows sympol loading, then the screen will turn black with the cursor on it-(everything up to this point is what has been going on for the past like 7 years) But this time, the cursor will be able to move for several seconds and then everything will freeze. This has happened before, and about after a month of no use the comuter will return to normal. I have tried debugging mode, reverting to the last configuration that worked, pretty much all of the alternatives with no luck. The only thing that does work is safe mode, and safe mode sucks. The is the third time this has happened to my computer. I know nothing about hardware or anything really beyond modding. Can anyone help me?

The computer is a hp, originally a '98 but later upgraded to xp. it has 64mb of ram, a 20g hardrive, a sound card and a video card (don't know which ones). It crashed once from a virus (hence the upgrade to xp) but that was a long time ago. The computer was made in early 2000.

XP is a bit much for 64mb, but thats not the issue here. I recommend reinstalling windows. preferrably 2000, but XP should work fine. if you have important data on the drive, put it in a different computer to copy said data, then put it back to format/reinstall.

you should be able to upgrade that said 64 mbs of ram to 1 stick of 512 SDK. XP will work like a dream then Cool. You probably better off building yourself a newer system though.

XP requires a minimum of 128 megs, so, erm... :\ Anyway, I'd go along with what Chiel posted.

It has been working fine with 64m, but since my computer is almost 8 yeards old, can I even find ram for it? Heck, it might even be cheaper to buy a comp newer comp second hand than upgrade it. I can still run my games in safe mode, but doing any modding work is a pain in the ass. I guess I'll go shopping today.
