Compatability Issues
First of all, I want to say I'm very tired, which means prone to spelling errors and so on, so that's why for that.
Anyway, I installed SE2K, modded a little, and wanted to play TS with my friend. We both have latest version of Firestorm, but he doesn't have SE2K anywhere near his comp. So I booted up SE2K, told it to "remove changes", "apply settings", and "yes". Still wasn't compatible with ANYONE in the lobby.
So I uninstalled, ran TS, same problem. Installed and reverted again, still nothing. Opened new, "Untitled" settings file, applied THOSE changes, and ran TS. Sometimes things make me very angry. I do NOT want to have to reinstall every time I don't want to play my own mod just because Steve screwed up.

If you can't be bothered renaming all of them or cuting and pasting them around... use Stusworld Mod Manager. You can find it in Stusworld, but the link is weirdo. So, go to http://ppm.editingsource.com and check the affiliates.... under Tiberian Sun you will find a link for Stusworld. Go there, go to the downloads and download the Stusworld Mod Manager. Read the instructions before using it. _________________

If you can find them, no need to care at them. The great majority of the mods (if not all) doesnt modify this and some of the other files I listed, although, if you see them, move them as well... _________________

About SE2K...
A few things about SE2k. First, nobody here seems to use it. Banshee, in fact, recommends wordpad, so I'm assuming he doesn't use it. As such, people who havent used it dont know how it works.
What SE2K does is apply a rules, sound, art, ai, etc INI file to TS whenever you press "apply settings". Even if you revert it, it applies the unchanged INIs to TS. Thing is, they are changed, so that SE2k can recognize them easier. But the rules are the same as an unmodified INI.
You have to delete all INI files that are externally spawned. In other words, any INI besides Sun.ini in the TS directory. For security/safety/legal reasons, I guess, SE2K doesnt want to delete files.
Now, here's a question for you wordpad gurus (since i havent tested this). If you extract the rules.ini with XCC and try to play online, will there still be the incompatibility error? QUICK_EDIT
another question: I applied both mods to both computers...but they still didnt compatible right. How do I get them to play together if I used SE2K to apply the exact same changes?

Also had a problem recently, where I tried to copy Rules.ini to another comp. Frustrated the hell outta me that it still didnt work. Did you make sure to copy ALL mod files? Even the unchanged Ai, Sound, etc inis will make roadblocks for play. QUICK_EDIT

any ini files that aren't keyboard.ini and sun.ini must be copied in your case. also expandXX.mix files.. well, I think it's clear: all contents of all mod files listed in my first reply above must be the same in all computers that will play together. _________________

right. I'll get on that a little later...or maybe never. Turns out due to the sucky internet on my 2nd comp, the connection crashes before the game starts. It all works fine (except a little slow) until you hit "go", then it takes awhile...etc etc. I think I'll take the laptop apart and find whats wrong with the internet. Just not now.

Alright. Obviously I don't see these files, which I understand. There in the .mix files...maybe? Can someone tell me what to open them with?

I use Se2k, like every day, and every day my so called mod goes apsolutely nowere. but what i found is that instead of reinstalling ts, just load up Se2k and it should have a blank mod open called "untitled" and then just hit apply changes, so this unmoded file is up. but it is always safe to make sure you remove changes of of any other mod you have made. the problem is that if you make more than one mod, and apply them both without removing, and then remove one, the other files will still be there. because it mods from normal unmoded files and and it removes the changes made by the mod you have open when you click remove changes, you can check your changes by opening the changes browser thingy in Se2k.
Now i can't gaurantee any of this, but this is my theory so don't sew me if it doesn't work (my dad hasn't passed the bar yet)
have a good day,

ive never used them
and quite frankly dont want to
i downloaded SE2k i think it was a long time back out of curiosity, and omg it was a piece of crap, limited as hell. I think for anyone to make a decent mod they will need to do without these sort of things and use good old Notepad.
Is there actually any mods that have had all the coding done in one of these editor programs ? _________________ QUICK_EDIT

Notepad blows, use wordpad!
ANYWAY, forget everything i said in my last post, naturally, because I use SE2k I have the same problem, and its fucken easy to fix. anyway, if you have SE2kmm (Sun Edit 2k Mod Manager) then its a bit easier. so load se2kmm and try to install a mod, it will give you a list of modified INI files, usually art.ini, sound.ini, ai.ini, and rules.ini. so then if you go into your TS directory (usually C:\westwood\Sun\) and find the INI files listed then delete them, cuz they are generated by Se2k they are not in a mix file, they are just loose in the directory. then everything is back to normal. I tryed copying the files from C:\Program Files\cps\Se2k\temp and replacing them with the loose INI files, but that still didn't work, so you just have to delete them.
This is more than a theory, it fixed my problem so stop uninstalling TS when you have this problem and FRIGGEN DO AS I SAY!
THANK YOU

I would try that, but I think I'm just gunna start using notepad / wordpad / microsoft word. Too bad I didn't know it earlier.
Still wanna know how to open the .mix's to get the files out.

Alright thanks. Now, I know how INI files work and such. Now, without opening these, I assume I'm able to do alot, however I know something's gunna be hard.
Forgetting all this MCV controversy you fools are gabbing about, how do I create a new side? There's probly alot involved when editing the INIs right?

new sides are difficult, I could never master it with INI editing I just used sunedit2k and erm... check the INI after that to see the modifications, but I still have a lot of trouble getting it to work.
OH, and never edit the original INI, make copies or erm... download copies from my site.

yes... well I've learned that now, I can't get the damn Mutant to work, or anything else for that matter, I just get that "Tiberium Sun has incountered a internal error" message. I shake with anger just at the thought of that message. I'll work on that erm... can I call it a mod if it doesn't work in any way at all?
Oh well

Yes, it's the "doesnt do a damn thing" mod. (pardon my language if it isnt advised here...I dunno the rules to every forum).
So...this doesnt explain what changes need to take place to make a new side.
And for those of you using XCC editor or whatever....once I've selected a .mix, how do I go back!?
