Subject description: does not like my pc

I am having a problem with Steam, the program from Valve to play their games.
A few days ago, i bought the Orange Box. I tried to install it on my new pc, but it failed.
The installing proces is a bit diffirent through Steam. First, you need to install Steam. Then Steam will update itself. After that, the game will install, and after that, Steam will update the game. Only if you have done all this, you can play your game.
My problem is that Steam doesn't update; it keeps standing on 0%. It can't be the game, because on my other pc (with Windows XP) it does work. I will give some details about the pc on which the game doesn't work:
-Intel Dual Core 6600 @ 2.40 GHz
-2 gig RAM
-Vista Home Premium 32 bit
-Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT
Also, i have Norton Internet Security 2007 running on the pc.

Can anyone who has Steam working on Vista please tell what i must do to let Steam work? And please, don't come with stupid answers like "Just F*cking Google It" or so, because i have tried those already Wink

Well, I've never had any problems with Steam on Vista, but you could try running the program as administrator.
Also, as the progress for updating is staying at zero, just make sure that your internet is fine and that steam can actually access it through your firewall and the like.

I've changed Norton so that it allows Steam to to whatever it must do, and given Steam administrator rights, but it still doesn't update... My internet is fine though, it's trying to update while i'm writing this comment.
Isn't there some other special trick or update you must do to make it work on Vista?

I haven't done anything special to my steam and it runs fine D:
I can't think of anything else major that you could do. Although you might like to just leave it updating for ages, just to see if anything happens.

I'm seriously thinking of kicking Vista from my pc, and installing XP on it.
But i have heard some things like when you change OS, you lose all your files, and that XP doesn't support Dual Core. Are those things true?

I'm pretty certain that XP supports dual core, although I'm not really that hot on this computer stuff ;P

The only other thing that I could think of for you to do would be to check out the steam forums and see if there's any help there.

Check with your antivirus that steam and all steam apps are not restricted to internet accses.

Also, you can disable UAC by going into MSCONFIG and the Tools or something. Thats what I did.

XP supports dual core.. I'm running it just fine #Tongue

And if you switched from Vista to XP on your machine, you'd probably notice things running a lot quicker.

Also.. most of your files are not lost when you change OS, providing a reformat of the hard-drive is not required.

Bumpie:
I still can't run Steam. I won't change my OS, because my parents then will kill me. #Tongue Also, on the other pc I have, it seems that the video card in that pc can't handle HL2 Episode 1, 2, Portal, or TF2...
So I will ask my question again: does anyone have got Steam working on Vista?

Try dual booting, Vista for parents, XP for you.

I have tried that many times, but it still doesn't work. Can I have your msn? Maybe you can help me trough that (and in Dutch of course #Tongue )...

Or is it just that my pc is unique that it can't run Steam Laughing Crying or Very sad

If you're using router in you'r network you could try open the port for steam (Portforwarding) since the routers often has it own firewall in them, and check that both firewalls let Steam send and recieve data (Norton and Windows) and make sure the steam server is not Locked from your computer or any programs.

Well, I have some news:
I have installed Steam (and Orange Box) on my other pc, let it update, copied all files to my Vista, and tested it. The good news is that it works, the bad side is that it doesn't work good; I have tried to start Steam at least a few dozen times in the last few days, and it only worked once (in which I could finish HL2 Episode 1 #Tongue )
So, any new suggestions?

And I have already searched trough all possible errors and solutions on Steam and the Steam forums (which are as spammy as the EA forums #Tongue)...
Still, thanks for the suggestion Wink

I have Steam working on Vista (64-bit at that) and it works just swimmingly. I have to concur that it isn't Vista's fault. Are you running it with an admin account? If not you could try that, or there may be something blocking it that you haven't figured out yet (Though I don't know what it would be).

If you're running on a limited-access account, don't expect at all to run steam. Convince them to give you a full-access account.

Until then, try disabling norton completely, who needs it these days, viruses are pretty much gone, and disable windows firewalls.

At that point it *should* work.

THis is the way of vista+XP=<3

1: Take backup (if not, you'll lose many (all) of your files)
2: remove vista (or ignor, this step issn't needed if you don't know how to do it)
3: Install XP, and remember to do a CLEAN INSTALL (select the vista drive, and split it into two partitions, if not, seperate disk's(Vista needs 40gb!!)
4: Update XP and install all wanted programs. If you use a wierless network, download a driver to it (sometimes, vista doesn't find all drivers by itself)
5: Start the instalation of vista, and select COSTOM (this is the most important step!) and select an other disk/partition than XP is on. Finnish the instalation.

If all worked, during startup (around 5-50sec after power on) you will hgiven possiabileties:

Older version of Windows
Vindows Vista

There you go! 97% of your applications will run just as well on Vista as on XP.
All of the following works:
XP 64 - Vista 32
XP 32 - Vista 64
XP 32 - Vista 32
XP 64 - Vista 64

PM me if you have any more questions. And no, you cann't instal XP on-top-of vista, I have tryed, lost about ALL my personal files that didn't have a backup, and renderd both XP and Vista useless. Full reinstall of the entire PC Rolling Eyes

Seriously, at this time I would really have someone nearby who does have Steam on Vista to help me out. Too bad you guys all live in other countries #Tongue It talk much harder trough internet then when you have someone next to you to see your pc...
Anyways, I will try what you guys said, and report back in a few minutes...

EDIT: well, it seems that Steam had to have a new update... I opened Steam on my other pc, copied the changed files to my new pc, and it works again. I think that every time Steam doesn't work, I must do this procedure to keep it going. Quiet stupid, but it works #Tongue
Now I'm going to kill some Combine, Zombies and Ant Lions in Episode 2! See ya soon #Tongue

The strugle continues #Tongue
I had got Steam running a few days ago; I copied all Steam files (including the whole Orange Box) from my other pc to this one. Too bad it has stopped working again today...
I also got rid of Norton; I have Nod32 now, but it doens't make any difference... I will go to the shop where I got this pc tomorrow or so to ask what can be wrong... (and maybe also to upgrade both pc's #Tongue)
