If anyone can tell me how this is done, in a slow precise manner, it would bring the appreciation from a beginner modder. I merely wish to view the models inside, fidle with copies to toy with ideas.

Not possible ATM. There is a converter available, but IIRC it costs ~50$. Schmafoozius from Thundermods.net has started work on a free importer but currently the project is in hibernation.

You might want to have a look at the sample art packages which you can get on the EA commandandconquer.com page and on some modding pages, but they include only a portion of the models.
