I keep getting a Explorer Illegal Operation when my computers finished loading up on the desktop. Sometimes when start it up the illegal operation wont appear, but then when I try to open any folder on my computer it pops up again. The Explorer Illegal Operation window is upright now, but im ignoring it. Anyway it says this exactly in the details...

EXPLORER caused a stack fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff742a3.

Whats Kernel32.dll? I backed this file up on a diskette and tryed to delete it, but it says that it cant be deleted becuase it was being used by windows. I also ran a scandisk and defraged my computer but that didnt seem to do much. Can anyone help me???

Try:

- Reinstalling windows (it usually fixes, but in your case it seems that it didnt :S)
- get a kernel32.dll from a friend with the same windows 98 than you (here is the portuguese version of win98SE, so I dont think I can help with that). Note that the replacement of this file must be done in DOS mode. Windows must not run while it's being done.
- check the bootlog.txt. It's an important text file in the c:\ which tells everything which is loaded and which couldnt be loaded. If you are able to send yours here, we can make some analysis.

If you are really pissed at this and would do everything to make it work again at the fastest way, delete C:\windows and reinstall the whole windows again, BUT IT'S EXTREMELY NOT RECOMMENDED. You would loose your whole registry and would need to reinstall almost all programs you have.

And... good luck!

The quotes above are the problems which happens in your boot. I think all of them (except for the last one) is related to drivers. I suggest you to enter in your windows in the security mode and see if windows runs or fails. If it runs normally, it´s surely a driver or a starting program problem. To know which programs starts with your computer and stop them from running, use the msconfig. It´s a utility located at your system dir. To be more specific, go to your start button and click in "run". Then, write msconfig. Remove the useless programs and see if your windows runs normally. Remember that Explorer.exe is sacred and must not be removed at any costs. Note that in your normal windows, explorer.exe was not loaded when the last boot was logged. You should also check if you have a problematic driver and also check for any virus. Good luck!

I've seen the bootlog here (from my pc) and... it's similar to yours, but has 4 extra lines related to the floppy drive which wasnt loaded by your boot. The line Init = is not wrong, since it's also in mine. I suggest you to go into the safe mode and use msconfig to know which programs are being loaded and uncheck the unneeded programs. Systray is the volume control near your clock and LoadPowerProfile is the energy settings (when the pc will turn off your video after some minutes of being inactive, etc...).

hmm.... What is Systray exactly? I know it's not the volume control thing because I have a different program for that. I have Systray, Explorer, and Mixer running, and I Know I can't exit Explorer or Mixer, but what about Systray?

Systray has nothgin to do with volume, its the bit at the bottom left with the icons tho u can colse it n the icons are still there so i havn't the faintest of what it "actually" does, tho i has nothing to do with sound.

When windows Fcuks(evil ppl blocking this word) up like this the best solution is to format ur Hard drive n reinstall windows, this will correct any issues liek windows giving Stupid ilegal operations. Tho u will have to backup stuff..........

(go into dos n type (if ya don't know how to format ur hd, tho, this WILL REMOVE ALL CONTENT ON THE C DRIVE): Format C: )

EDIT : Sndvol32.exe located in the windows dir does the sound. and systrays description(right click on it n click on version) : "System Tray Applet"

No, mate! Never format it! There is always a better way. In the worse emergency, delete c:\windows and install everything again. But there are probably better ways...

formating is the best way , deleting windows leave loads of crap on ur pc such as programs that don't work anymore. Formating starts from a clean start.

Deleting windows...... well i don;t know if u can just delete windows, it could eather work by 'del c:\windows' or it could just delete all the files in C:\windows n leave the sub directorys.

If you can backup all the things u need then i suggest a format.

The choise is urs.....P.S do u know How to install Windows????? If u don't then i would do some reading b4 u do anything.

No, do not format! STFU with this format thing, Stu!

Make a backup of the current windows somewhere (in a zip file or in a CD, you choose). Then, restart your pc in DOS mode (you know the F8 trick in the boot, after the BIOS?). In the DOS, you write:

Code:
deltree c:\windows

then, get your win98 CD or copy that you have in the HD (if you really have it #Tongue) and install it again with all your programs.

BUT BEFORE TRYING THAT...

Try the safe mode. When you do the F8 trick in the boot, choose the safe mode and when you load your windows (it will probably load), go to start menu -> run. And write:

Code:
msconfig

At the last guide known as Start, uncheck all useless programs keeping only ScanRegistry and SystemTray. If it works, your computer will run much faster...

-uuummm... When you say install it again with all your programs, does this mean that all my programs will not work? Because most of the programs I have are downloaded and I no longer have the installer to them. Which means I cant reinstall them)I had to delete the insrtallers to make more space on the HD).

-I have already unchecked all the uneeded programs, the only one besides the ones you mentioned that are currently running is MCafee Virus Shield.

-How would I copy back all the files to windows if windows is deleted?

*If I delete and reinstall widows, will my registry be wiped out?

All programs that use the registry will no longer work, because the registry will be wiped. The programs that install files in your system directory will also not work.

Deactivate VShield. This will probably help and surely speed up a lot your pc.

You know how to deal with DOS? Yea, use the DOS to install your windows. go to your windows dir and write install. It will probably work.

Copy all your windows files to somewhere else before deleting them from your hard drive.

In that case, im going to just reformat my HD. Im going to back up everythig thats possible for me to back up, than I will just redownload all the other programs. Also I will back up all the drivers. I have a friend who knows how to reformat hard drives, so I will just have him do it.

You gonna loose all your documents, games, ppm files, websites, everything will be wiped if you reformat. If you only delete windows and install it again, you will have to reinstall Ra2, any Norton or Mcafee program, ICQ (in case you have it), IE6 and all its patches and maybe reinstall some of the other games to play them online, but ALL WAREZ GAMES WILL RUN NORMALLY. MSN will run normally and several other stuff will not have problems. Another game that usually have problems is Age Of Empires 1, but since you hate it, you wont have problems with it.

Documents wille be backed up, Games I will just have to redownload, pmm files and wbsites will be backed up too. Its better if I reformat the HD because it will surely destroy my problems, and maybe my CD rom drive might start working again. I doubt it, I think a plug is loose and thats why it not working properly.
