Best Mod In the Area of...
I Don't know, I just though I'd make this topic. Post your thoughts on what Mod hosted by PPM is the best in the areas of:
Terrain
Game Play
Units
Graphics
Buildings
Maps / Campaign
and: I'm looking forward to ... Because.
In my opinion:
Terrain - Derelict Soil / TAKTICS
Game Play - Ehh, Only a downloadable mod, Being as I don't play alot of them, I don't really know. I'll have to say Return of the Dawn, being as it's one of the only mods I've downloaded and actually played.
Units - Reign of the steel, the mech's are incredible.
Graphics - In terms of Side-bars and menu's etc. TAKTICS.
Buldings - Tiberian Oddysey.
Maps / Campaign - I've not seen alot of mods that have got very unique maps and or campaigns (can't vote for my own mod ), I'd have to say that the Rise of Omnius Campaign seems promising, and Tiberian Oddysey has got it's share of Interesting maps.
I'm looking forward to TAKTICS more than anything, there are not a lot of mods hosted that I'm actually looking forward to, to be honest (That're hosted by PPM anyway) Last edited by Aro on Wed Apr 30, 2008 1:40 pm; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
Terrain - Derelict Soil + TAKTICS
Gameplay - TW - ADW/ROTD
Units - ROS...
Graphics - Err...TO?
Buildings - TO
Pretty much the same...but there _are_ several mods...namely RA2: Moscow's Vengeance, RO and of course TI. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
TAKTICS, Reign of the Steel, Lost Relic, RO. TI TO....
I know a little bias towards aesthetics in my decisions here, primarily more so in the design of the units and how they pulled them off and how they handled their idea thus far.
Also the originality factor, while I can say that majority of the mods here focus on the C&C storyline, and yea it is very interesting idea to explore, but it gets really tiring afterwards.. it almost feels gimmicky in a sense that, sometimes it seems trying lure popularity with fan service.
Being here for a long time, it kinda feels very primitive concept, a mold that sometimes conforms really good ideas into mush.
Now we have a lot of tools at our disposable and also access to lot more talent and skill. Production quality is also increasing, but also complexity and that I can see sometimes that flinting idea of ditching the box, to create something new.
..so it is a great thing to see people branch out or play around with ideas that have not been touched upon or whatever, but also avoid falling into other imaginary traps themselves...
I mean compare .shps now to when RA1 was big. C+P was pretty much the staple solution, aside from ripping .shps from TD...that same idea transcended itself into the TS/RA2 era, and I admit I was there.. my favorite was the mix and match voxels..
Now we have 3d modelers, concept artists, voxel artists with talent and experience. Shp Builder, VXLSE, 3ds2vxl. etc. and more coming on the way.
and hopefully the patch projects will this forward and allow for creativity to grow exponentially.
or people will realize they can just move on, into other game engines or realize they can make their own. Since modding is just one giant box on its own....
Thank you destiny, if I ever release a Beta you're looking good for a beta tester position, if you want it.
And I personally think the big mods are over-rated, they're good and all but they suck in all the talent like a "Skillz vacuum", there isn't one SHPer I know of who is free to work on smaller projects, leaving people like me with a real problem that doesn't look like it'll go away real soon. Some of these mods have quoite big tems, granted others don't ATM but most of the time a large portion of the community is working on a small portion of the available projects, and showing relatively little for it...
And I think my mod is the only one bridging the RA1/TD gap, maybe RA1.5 does, but I don't know too much about it. _________________ Yes, work on MV continues. It is not forgotten. QUICK_EDIT
Albrect, you can use all of my publicly released assets. Thats like 3 mid quality units right there! .SHPing with a 3d program is rather easy IMO, but than again my score in the Best Infantry Contest was like a 60.
I don't think I have actually played any mods here... _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
Most of the mods I listed are actually relatively few core people that are working on them, with probably the exception of TO has had a few people on and off. I believe, most of it was "float" talent to do a few minor contributions and move around.
Keep in mind some mods have been in development for a very..very long time.
If you know who to ask and where to look, its possible. Some people just formed tight knits overtime..thats just people skills for ya..
The problem isn't a lack of ".shp" artists or talent, it is people don't know how to look. Its really just branching out into other communities and particularly ones with specialized interests. I can say that inexperienced ''modders''wouldn't know how to communicate that need without appearing foolish.
Simply starts out by asking themselves when they need talent.
Is to specify...oh. I really need a 3d modeler, or even more specific, character modeler, architecture modeler....animator..GUI artist. Pixel animator. etc. then stating why..etc.
Not".shp artists" because outside of this speck of the internet that title virtually doesn't exists. _________________ Delirium.. QUICK_EDIT

Ickus is right, being a shper or voxeller, won't get you very far outside this community. However a 3D modeler, or a sprite artist, would be a different case. (BTW this is the reason for the all the promotional contents I've been making lately; planning to join moddb to get some staff)
On topic:
Terrain: My vote would go for TAKTICS
Game Play: Tiberian Sun Dusk, gamemodes FTW
Units: Aro seems to have selected this by units graphics, dunno TO or ROS
Graphics: TAKTICS
Buildings: Graphics again, I would say Lost Relic and TFTD.
Maps / Campaign: A hard choice, but I guess I'll have to go with TO, TI is also quite promising QUICK_EDIT

Star Strike for all.
Ok so it doesn't look as good as TO, or many of the mods mentioned above, it uses the same buildings, same terrain, ect.
But, compared to other mods, its a good chance.
-3 Balanced sides, and not GDI or Nod or Allied or Soviet!
-A team of two dedicated staffmembers (EVA and Yuri'sArmy) have produced more releases than some of the fancier mods could dream of.
-Mostly original content.
I just don't see what makes the other mods so, enchanting, really. When they start talking about releases and posting screenshots more often..Yeah, that'd be nice. I mean, pretty graphics are nice, but, Why wait years for 'quality'(again, will these mods actually be balanced, or just a graphical showcase?) which may never show because of poofing team members, when its right here! asdf _________________ PPM's Reichstrollfuherer, 236th Trollenparties brigade.
