University
Hey people!
I don't know what systems other countries use, but here in the Netherlands we had our final exams last month and today we got the results!
I passed them all. This was my last year of the Dutch "Highschool", I guess all countries have at least something in between elementary school and university just with different and equally fancy names
At the end of the month I'll collect my certificate and after this summer I'll be going to University to study Technical Informatics (does that ring a bell? ). I know loads of you are already students, so tell me, what are your experiences? Just a random subject
College here.
it goes:
Primary school age (5-6to11-12)
Secondary school (12-13to16-17)
College(til u r 19) _________________ Yes, work on MV continues. It is not forgotten. QUICK_EDIT
What's with the "Brush" Comment? Is it the hair? Oh... After 18 you stop getting EMA IIRC _________________ Yes, work on MV continues. It is not forgotten. QUICK_EDIT

You get after 18 as long as you're 18 when the course starts. I got it this year (final before uni) despite turning 19 in january (I dropped out of my sixth form so I lost a year of edumacation). QUICK_EDIT

I study computer science on UFF (Fluminense Federal University) and it is quite different from anything I've seen in school. Brazilian school system works someway like this:
-> Ensino Fundamental (somewhat similar to primary school, but it takes 9 years) [5-6 years old to 13-14]
-> Ensino Médio (3 years only, 14-15 to 17-1
-> Ensino Superior (University)
University courses based on technology courses are much harder than 99% school, specially in a scientific focused university like mine. The maths subjects that were so easy at school became a major pain in the ass. I hate any sort of calculus, algebra, geometry, statistics and physics subject. University has a lot of more interesting subjects than school and you can choose what you wanna learn every 6 months. You also need to do some optional subjects as well.
People is far more mature in a university and all prejudice you see at school against nerds is gone. People are there to learn and if people are not nerd in your course, they won't graduate . It is that simple. University offer has a lot of events and some students also organize other fun events there and outside it as well. In my university, I study far from it and I have classes on several campus, so I'm forced to do some tourism in Niteroi (city where my university is located) between the classes and I spend a lot of money with transport. The relationship between teachers and students is also different, a bit more relaxed than school and you actually get to become friend of some of your teachers.
In overall, I prefer university over any school, but I'm there for about 6 years and I still have no clue when I'll get my graduation diploma . I have a bunch of friends in the same or even worse situation than mine. It is extremely rare to see someone finishing the university in the time people were expected to do it, in my course it is 4 years. QUICK_EDIT
Where abouts are you studying then? And thanks for telling me that.
I've been in Gateshead College in well, gateshead and I'll be in northumbria uni this september.

Sounds pretty rough, must be horrendous not having a clue when you'll actually get what you're there for. QUICK_EDIT
Majoring in Computer Information Systems (their name for Computer Science degree).
I currently already have an Associate's of General Studies in Computer Information Systems from Pueblo Community College.
And a Network+ certification, and 1 of 2 tests passed for the A+ certification. Thinking of building further upon that.
Also, it is not divided by age here. I saw more people who are old enough to be my dad or grandpa at Pueblo Community College than people younger than me. QUICK_EDIT

University is fun, I'm at Leeds right now doing physics and it's certainly very different to anything you'll ever have at school. There's a lot more freedom but it can be a lot more challenging. For me at least, there's very little choice in what I can do until the third year (next year) so I'm stuck with the syllabus lined out by the university until I get a choice of 11 from about 20 or so modules so I can specialise in a particular field of physics or just do what I find interesting.
Remember, unless you're exceptionally boring and have no life, university is a chance to broaden your horizons, break free a little and enjoy life. It's not all about constant eduction. _________________

Here in Chile the education system is separated in 3 main levels:
Enseñanza Básica: Analogous to the school level, lasts 8 years (5-6 to 13-14). It's after an optional level called "Enseñanza Prebásica", which would be the analogous to preschool. This optional level has been increasing in popularity to the point it's almost not optional anymore.
Enseñanza Media: Analogous to high school, lasts 4 years (13-14 to 17-1
Enseñanza Superior: It's college or a technical school.
I'm currently studying Biochemistry (second year from at least 5) at the PUCV (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso). It's a catholic church so I'm forced to take 2 religious classes while I'm studying at it (not as terrible as it may seem, as there are a lot of optional classes, raging from reading the bible to philosophy). BTW I chose it because it's one of the best colleges here (also relatively close to were I live), and also got a full scholarship there, thanks to my highscore at a country wide test, which wasn't offered by universities.
College is a nice place, way better than school/high school, since you're not forced to study things you don't like, and you can even customize you classes. And also the people you'll meet there is interested in the same things than you. My main problem with it, is that I have to take a train and travel 1 hour to get there, not really a big problem, it's just a bit expensive.
I also have, just like Banshee, classes in different campus, (at least for the moment since a new sciences campus is being built). But it's nice since I can do a bit of tourism . Valparaiso is considered patrimony of mankind (due to extensive amount of architecture that dates from the colony times), is also a coastal city (sadly no good beaches), and one of the most important ports of the country. Studying BioInformatics at the University of Toronto.
About the age comment: I knew a Holocout survivor who started attending UofT at the age of 91, sadly he passed away before finishing his major. QUICK_EDIT
American Highschool you get out around when you are 18. I said screw the system, skipped my last two years of high, and went to college. I'll have my associate degree before everyone else I know has their highschool diploma. The best thing my highschool did for me is let me not go there _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

There are PUCs in Brazil as well, Machine. And they are excellent universities, specially the one from Rio de Janeiro. I have some friends who studies or studied on PUC Rio. I didn't pass to that uni because... errr... I've missed the first test... ROFL! I've messed up with the time of the test. But I'd also need a constant high score to keep studying there, since it is very expensive and... from what I've done on both UFF and UERJ (another university I've studied), I'd hardly keep any high rates there.
The PUC from Rio is just one big campus, not far from my home, but the traffic jam makes it look like a long way. QUICK_EDIT
Studying BioInformatics at the University of Toronto.
BioInformatics = Hardcore machine learning, awesome *thumbs up*. Machine learning IS the best course any software related major can do. _________________ NOD: "We hate GDI because they have taken all the green zones and only allow us to hide out in the crap yellow and red zones."
Me: "Well NOD shouldn't of freaken helped spread Tiberium everywhere, dumbasses!" QUICK_EDIT
College and uni be damned. I'm situated in a training facility studying to take my MCP and MCTS:Web. It's only a 14 week program. None of that 2 to 4 year bullshit for me. _________________
