Once I learned that the German release of C&C95 didn't get proper sidebar icons, I decided to remedy this injustice. The result is below. All icons were created using my C&C95 blank icons pack, and the font is identical to the one in the English version.

The icons are neatly packed into MIX files, ready to be put into the C&C95 directory to replace the old ones.

Please tell me your comments and suggestions. German is not even my first foreign language, and some unit/structure names turned out to be quite lengthy, so I had to abbreviate them. If you have better ideas about how to fit some names on the icons (I'm especially concerned about the "Mantel des Schweigens"), let me know Smile

Also, Nyerguds included my icons in his German C&C95 Upgrade, more info here.

Can't you just translate the units directly into German? I think then most text will fit in the cameos completely.
Just some (hopefully) correctly translated stuff from my German knowledge:
Flame Tank - Flammpanzer
Light Tank - Leichte Panzer
Artillery - Artillerie
Flamethrower - Flammenwerfer
Apache - Apache #Tongue
MRLS - Raketenwerfer
Chem Warrior - Chem Krieger
Stealth Tank - Stealth Panzer
SAM-Site - Flugabwehrrakete
Engineer - Ingenieur

Do note: I got some things from Wiki

He's using the names that are already in the game. It's no use having icons that say something completely different than the game strings.

@ Dutchygamer

In the german version, some units have special nicknames, one of the reasons CnC1 was so popular in germany.

However, I would prefer to have icons with the "normal" names instaed of nicknames.
"Tanrpanzer" or "Kampfpanzer" are way shorter and make quite clear what the unit is intended for #Tongue

Flibble, you know you can use two text lines for those icons? You don't need to shove it on to one line.

Yeah I got to agree with that as long as it does not cover the whole picture.

This is how several units icons appear in Tiberian Sun if there are long text strings.

BTW are you going to do French, Spannish and Japanese version too? Very Happy

I was reluctant to do so, even though this solution is quite obvious, for a sole reason that two-line text was not used until RA2 (TS is different IMO because the text is independent from the cameos, it can be turned off completely and there are no darkened "text" areas on the cameo images). In German and French RA for example, all text is stuffed into a single line. Even though I might be pedantic about this, I'd like the icons to be as close to what the original ones as possible.

This would certainly be easier to do (especially "Tarnpanzer" instead of "Mantel des Schw." Confused).

Nyerguds wrote:

The tricky thing is that in the English version, one unit has a different text on the icon: the icon says "Rocket Soldier", but the in-game string is "Bazooka". So we've got a precedent here.

However, there can be a considerable argument for using different names for certain units on the icons: "Tarnpanzer" and "Mantel des Schweigens" actually aren't mutually exclusive: the former is, so to speak, the "technical" name, and the latter is the nickname. So if the icons present the "technical" names and the in-game strings the nicknames, more information is given to the player.

Your opinions please Smile

Interesting how the "Light Tank", for example, was "Fist of Nod" in German version Razz

"StahlHagel" can better be translated as "Steel Hail" or "Hail of Steel"...

Here you go Smile

Tell me which are better in your opinion. Personally I do like the fancy German names, if they were but easier to fit onto the icons Smile
