Red Alert 3 Beta is out and some quick info on it!
Subject description: It is a multiplayer demo only, with 2 maps, where you can provide public feedback.
Hey everyone!
The public beta of Red Alert 3 has started to reach the community yesterday. A selected group of community leaders and a group of approximately 2000 fans have received their keys and started playing the game. I've got my key and I've already downloaded the program.
The beta allows you to play against other people online, using all factions, on two maps: "Cabana Republic" and "Roundhouse Redux", which are a 2 players and 4 players respectively. You have access to the full tech tree from each faction. There is no skirmish, no campaign and no working AI. According to the readme, there might be new revisions including ballance changes, game fixes, graphics changes, audio changes and new maps.
First of all, I've quickly analysed the game, modding wise. It is the same system from C&C3, using pretty much the same file formats. A bunch of relo/bin/imp/manifest files that requires an appropriate mod SDK to create. The .BIG files can be browsed by OS BIG Editor. I have yet to find the remaining ini files. I think this time EALA has wiped them all. But the LUA files are understandable. Of course it is impossible to mod the beta, since you can only play it online.
Then, it was time to play it. The menu still uses a Red Alert 2 music that repeats all the time and makes us grow tired of it. Most (if not all) unit sounds are from Red Alert 2. Apparently the ingame music from the soviets wasn't from RA2, but it wasn't good either. The interface is quite simplistic, but effective. It's always good to hover your mouse over the options to know what each thing does.
The first game I've played had JohnWE, Chrono from Planet CnC and a random lucky person in the group of the 2000 lucky fans who got the keys. Two of them had to leave quickly, leaving me and Chrono in a battle easily won by Chrono, even with JohnWE wipping Chrono's main base before leaving and my base untouched on most of the game. As a newbie and someone who has never been enthusiastic with naval battles, I've ignored it for many minutes and I was definitely starving with one refinery. Naval is sacred for your economy in the game, since most of the resources are in the water, and unlike old C&C games, each resource only allows one harvester on it. I'm one of these people who used to create two or three refineries and a bunch of harvester to collect resources at the same tiberium field. In the end of the battle, he could test his whole arsenal on me and I had to defend against dreadnoughts using conscripts, flak troopers and testa troopers. Of course, it doesn't work. But regardless of the result, I had some fun, although I prefer Kane's Wrath gameplay style, to be honest. Last edited by Banshee on Sun Jul 27, 2008 7:58 pm; edited 2 times in total QUICK_EDIT
Roundhouse redux? Roundhouse Kick i assume. And I thought I read somewhere thay Cabana republic was The official tournament map A. (Both of which I've made for cnc3, I wonder's whose it truere to the orginal ). Anyways, are the cameos artsy like in ra2 or renders like in TW? We can rip cameos with screenshots if want something moddable to take with us _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

The cameos are small and I'm not really a fan of them, although the worse thing I've seen there weren't the cameos. It was the random faction symbol. That was horrible. QUICK_EDIT
Haxx time ForumW maybe? Or perhaps somewhere else?

I don't like playing against super hardcore gamereplays folk. Anyone here interested in some friendly games?
EVA-251 should be my online name. In the next millenium, when I get the key, I would be glad to play versus anyone from PPM. _________________ YR modder/artist, DOOM mapper, aka evanb90

No, it IS that big. The biggest file I ever attempted on my old dial-up line is a Quicktime installer, 17 megs, and it took an unbearable hour and a half. A 700MB file would be cut short at some point when the line disconnects for some reason or another, so the only way he could do it is on a torrent. _________________

he could go to a library where they have high speed and download there, and then transfer it to his comp.
Where is Carno lately anyways? _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

Funny, I've done two very large downloads with 56k
The Nehahra (sp?) TC for Quake I, which was around 80-90mb
Then the Military Forces Quake III TC, which was around 33mb.
MFQIII took about 7 hours, Nehahra...oh god. _________________ YR modder/artist, DOOM mapper, aka evanb90

The LAN option interests me as it should mean I can play using hamachi... When there's a way around the need for a CD key to install (I assume) anyway. QUICK_EDIT
