Best internet company to get?
I've been looking in to different internet companies to get me some internet at home, I was just wondering if I could get some good input on which ones I should go with or avoid.
I'm looking for one between $20-$40 a month, and powerful enough for at least 5 laptops to play games online without having issues.
I'm currently looking at Verizon (since I already have a verizon phone), Roadrunner, DSL, and comcast.
Comcast as phantom transfer caps.
Verizon isn't half bad (I have it at my house up north).

Verizon FiOS is so far the best I've had in the past few years.
with FiOS I never had connection errors, never had down time, ect.
Whatever the hell you do, do NOT get ComCast or Charter. Both suck hard, have hidden transfer caps, and block certain ports. Nothing but trouble from them both.
Roadrunner isn't bad, but for the money, FiOS is for sure worth it, especially if you get TV and phone bundled with it. 114 a month for all three. Not sure on the singular rates though. _________________ "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there." -Adam Young QUICK_EDIT
In recent years I've had comcast and charter. Charter sucks hard, never EVER get it. Comcast doesn't seem that bad, and I would always take comcast over charter. I haven't tried verizion though _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

Any advise would be greatly appreciated
Since FiOS' entry-level tier (10Mbps down, 2Mbps up) has been bumped up to 43 dollars a month if you already have Verizon home phone service (48 if you don't), I don't know if you'd be willing to splurge. It really is excellent service. If you don't want to spend extra, then go for Road Runner. If you just mean Verizon DSL and have confirmed you can't get FiOS, then...... sure, RoadRunner. If you don't know if you can get FiOS, then just say what city you're in/near; there may even be Optimum Online nearby. _________________

You mean that the internet costs more in the US than it does in the UK? This is a day to herald, something that is actually cheaper (admittedly by about a fiver) in the UK! _________________

I only stated the cost of one ISP, mind you. My particular ISP is rolling out fiber-to-the-node ADSL2+ at 12Mbps and 20Mbps tiers (with 900Kbps upload for both tiers, this unfortunately is due to natural technical limitations of the ADSL specification); I don't have the current cost of the 20Mbps price on me, but current 7Mbps customers can jump to 12 for 38 USD/month for as long as they have the service (late summer promotional, it'd be a lot better if they priced it that way all the time). Some cable ops and Verizon's FiOS have more speed for the money, but FiOS is contract-based and cable internet in the US, at least on the east coast, isn't exactly known for reliable, consistent service.
Most US ISPs don't throttle or cap users, if not on the same level of UK ISPs. Need I mention the heat Virgin and BT have taken in recent years? Granted it's not as big as Comcast (who indiscriminately bi-directionally injects false-reset TCP packets in the upstream channel of all torrent ports, though not in all areas it seems), but our ISPs do tend to have higher value if not lower cost than a lot of the rest of the world's, barring Sweden, France, South Korea, Japan, and a couple others I might have forgotten. _________________

Oh come on, Comcasts not THAT bad... XD
Until they clean up their phantom caps and false-reset packets acts, then yes, they are. I agree with Comcast that network management is necessary, but the problem is that A., Comcast absoutely WILL NOT tell anyone, even their own CSRs, what the exact current transfer limits are, and B., they still deny up and down that they use Sandvine P2P-port traffic management.
The good news (or bad news, depending on how well Comcast already works for you) is that they're resolving problem A by heavily considering a hard 250GB cap for all customers by the end of the year, along with stronger DMCA enforcement and throttling as outlined by Comcast's CTO Tony Werner in the following quote;
Quote:
Comcast’s plan is to identify the 2% or 3% of customers who over the last hour or two have consumed more than 50% of the capacity on the network, Werner said. Those heavy users are then given lower priority and will have their bandwidth limited for a temporary period of time.
However, Werner said, “even those who go to that lower state will be above DSL. So it’s not terrible.”.
Problem B has been resolved just in the past week as the FCC has ordered them to disclose their traffic management methods in their ToS/AUP.

How 'bout Cogeco?
He's not in Canada, so suggestion = invalid. Canadian ISPs are known for bandwidth nazi-ism anyway. _________________

Yeah, there's just no competition... bunch of assholes raising their prices. Although I must say, it is fast, and their phone service is exceptional. _________________ Destroy to create. All for the hunt to dominate!
