Sorcerer vs. Wizard. Which is better?
Wizard: Needs to memorize spells, can only memorize 2-4 per level (2 for the latest level, 3 for the second latest). Can't cast non-memorized spells. They can memorize a spell multiple times. For every memorized instance, a spell can be cast once. When it runs out, you need to sleep to cast it again. Advantages are that they can learn spells from scrolls, which are in abundance around the areas you're in (This makes you able to learn more at once). Also, they get an extra 2 spells more than sorcerers every level. Wizards start off without any weapons or armour skills (Besides the ability to use basic simple weapons, like daggers and clubs, but not swords, axes, or bows. Can use crossbows, though).
Sorcerer: Can cast spells 4 times, but they only get one or two spells per level. Don't have to memorize spells. Can't learn from a scroll. On leveling up, they can unlearn a spell in favour of a better one. Also, they use Wisdom rather than Intelligence (Wizards ue intelligence) to determine their spell damage. Sorcerers start with some basic weapons skills, as well as the ability to use a number of different kinds of armour. QUICK_EDIT
The Wizard is better, I think. You have NO idea how many scrolls I find. I get about 20 scrolls on an average quest, and though about 1/3 of them are either Divine or Nature spells (Which Wizards can't learn. The scrolls is still usable, because all Wizards can cast directly from a scroll. The scroll is destroyed in the process), the rest are usually Arcane spells. They're learnt instantly, so there's no waiting for a level up (And lets face it, 10000 XP doesn't come quick). When I leveled up to Level IV spells (Caster level 9 or 10, I think), I got Phantasmal Killer and Wall of Fire as my levelling up spells, and then learned about 5 other spells from the scrolls I found in Meldanen's (Elven Wizard) estate, then bought two scrolls from the Mages Guild guy. I have ALL the good scrolls, and I got Ice Storm for FREE in a scroll, and it's EXTREMELY powerful. Also, if you need more than one cast of a spell, then memorize it twice. There's plenty of time to rest and recharge your spells, so just memorize Magic Missile 4 times and Fireball twice, and the fireballs will easily take out 6 or 7 weak enemies, then just pick the survivors off with the missiles. And hey, you've ALWAYS got a Henchman (Mercenary) when you're a Wizard (because you lack HP), so he can take the up-front abuse. One you kill everyone just sit down for a rest. Everyone in the party gets their wounds healed, spells recharged, and recovers from poisons and (sometimes) disease, and they're ready to take on the next batch of badasses.
Anyway, that's what I think. Anyone who thinks differently, post your speculations. Meantime, I've got some Dire Spiders to fry.
(Note to doug: Bioware, a CANADIAN COMPANY! [just to provoke CC], makes NWN. I think they publish it, as well, but I'm not entirely sure. If you're making a NWN forum, and need a NWN player to moderate it, I'm your man ) QUICK_EDIT

I would say they're equally balanced otherwise players would only use one or the other, the Sorceror gives more flexibility while the Wizard appeals more to the power player so the poll is more an opinion poll QUICK_EDIT
Yea, true, but it's mainly about your style of play. I mean, I like to do a lot of stuff (Unlocking doors, charming enemies, hasting myself, and such), so I like the Wizard and his piles of spells (I have every spell from Level 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 learned @.@). On the other hand, some people might prefer simple, unadulterated, earth shattering ASSKICKING (Ooh, look at the pretty fireworks!), and they'd prefer the Sorcerer because he can cast about 20 Magic Missiles and a bazillion Fireballs and such.
(Also, with the wizard, you can customize your spells for your enemy. If a sorcerer focuses on Fire-based spells, what do you do when a Balor Lord of Fire or Greater Fire Elemental comes flying at you like a crazed porcupine? As a wizard you can switch Empowered Fireball for Ice Storm, Fireball for Lightning Bolt, Meteor Storm for Time Stop, etc.) QUICK_EDIT

I actually find using spell casters quite annoying and difficult but I would say that I prefer the Sorceror because they need less micro-management. The key is diversity, if you only specalise in one element then, as you say, when somebody of the same element appears, you die unless you have large ammounts of resistance.
My current favourite overall are rouges. Last edited by Shadow on Tue Dec 03, 2002 5:06 pm; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
