Computer problems.
Subject description: So very annoying.
Hey guys, at the moment I'm encountering a problem on my relatively new PC and the problem began from day one. The computer likes to turn itself off when doing anything remotely straining, and by off I mean, POOF! gone, power down without warning. It could be a number of things, but I got this computer because my previous computer was having similar problems and I couldn't really find out what the problem was, this time however I need to find out why this machine turns off so rapidly.
Causes for the crashes so far have been:
Playing games, ie CnC 3, Tiberian Sun.
Leaving the Tiberian Sun main menu running for around 7 minutes causes an immediate shutdown.
Trying to burn a movie to a DvD.
Sometimes when I have a few processes running such as Winamp, Mozilla Firefox (on a youtube video) and MSN.
Viewing a voxel in voxel viewer also recently made the PC just power off completely.
Occasionally when I do a PC virus scan.
The specs of the PC aren't brilliant but they are not exactly poor for say, running Tiberian Sun.
I've tried numerous things to test what it may be, I've had the case off and had my air cooler blowing directly into it, however it doesn't stop the shutdowns at all. I really could use some help to try and find out the problem, I don't have the time to go checking every individual part or the money to get some shop to do it for me.
ok, I want you to go to control panel, and then click on "Power Options" (If you can't see it, switch to classic view). Now once you open up power options, tell me what you see. You comp might be configured to "save power" or something like that.
Does your comp shuit down, or does it go to "sleep"? _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

That's the other thing. After looking at the post again, it REALLY sounds like a heat issue. Pop that sucker open, get a can of compressed air, and blast all the dust out. At the very least this is a good start but I think it'll help quite a bit. _________________

Not an old PC. With the power supply it was sold with. Doesn't sound to me like age has anything to do with it, but the power supply may be faulty. _________________
you got the 8600, did you get a power supply too, or are you just using what it came with? _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
Power supply came with the case, so it could very well be that if it can't keep up, it would most likely be a heating issue, living in Australia summer tends to get fairly hot, but the PC would still ztype up even on cold days. At least I can focus on heating issues and power supply problems, thanks . _________________ QUICK_EDIT

The vents being clogged with dust could prevent hot air from leaving the case, which could heat it up under any climate. Just make sure the fans and vents aren't clogged with dust. _________________

you can download an analysing tool like SiSoft Sandra and check the temperature. Also run the PC with the case open and check if all fans run. A friend of mine had the same problem, because a big cable blocked the main CPU fan.
You can also simply sum up the watts of your hardware and compare it with the output of your PowerSupplyUnit.
e.g. 1 HDD (max 30W), CPU (max 125W), GraCa (max 100W), RAM (max 25W), Mainboard (max 25W), DVD (max 15W) and you get a total of 320W. A cheap 400W PSU could be already overloaded since they have a low efficiency of under 80% output which is under 320W. _________________ SHP Artist of Twisted Insurrection: Nod buildings
