Subject description: 8 new maps for YR, replaces the allied campaign
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

So I made a new campaign for YR about a year ago. Recently I've been playing it again and figured I'd post it here. It's 8 new missions, that replace the allied campaign. New loading screens and all that, just unzip and put all the files in your YR folder.

The story is just a replacement of the RA2 story. You mainly play as allied vs soviet, yuri units come in at the end as soviet units. A lot of the mission have you in control of a small group on infantry against a large Soviet base, as that is the kind of missions I like. As the bases are quite large you'll need a fairly modern computer to run them.

I'd be quite interested in how difficult people find them. I'm having a hard time telling if they are too easy or too hard. As well as if you find them fun or boring, and any other comments you may have.

Intro:
This is a new allied campaign for Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge. It has 8 singleplayer missions to replace the original allied campaign. I figured that now that the game is seven years old, there has been two new games in the series, and basically everyone has forgotten about it, it's a good time to make a new campaign for it. I've always been obsessed with this game, and I have made tons of singleplayer maps. Most of my maps have been very basic, huge Soviet base, small infantry only special ops US force, try to take out base. The maps in this campaign use a lot of infantry vs base, but there are some base vs base maps. Also for this I've done a lot of polishing up, and I feel it has a pretty professional feel to it now. Custom loading screens, mission briefs, objectives, mission names, under/over par times, and other little touches. Most of the maps put you as the US vs Soviet forces, Yuri plays very little part in the campaign (although they all require YR).

Install:
The installation is easy. If you are reading this, you have probably already unzipped the file. All you need to do is put the contents of the zip in your RA2 folder. Mine is at C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command & Conquer The First Decade\Command & Conquer Red Alert(tm) II\RA2\, however if you have the original game it might be something like C:\Westwood\RA2\ or C:\Program Files\Westwood\RA2\. You should have the following files:
all01umd.map - Mission 1
all02umd.map - Mission 2
all03umd.map - Mission 3
all04umd.map - Mission 4
all05umd.map - Mission 5
all06umd.map - Mission 6
all07umd.map - Mission 7
all08umd.map - Mission 8
LS800A01a.PAL - Mission 1 pallet file (used for colors in loading screen)
LS800A01a.SHP - Mission 1 custom loading screen
LS800A02a.PAL - Mission 2 pallet file (used for colors in loading screen)
LS800A02a.SHP - Mission 2 custom loading screen
LS800A03a.PAL - Mission 3 pallet file (used for colors in loading screen)
LS800A03a.SHP - Mission 3 custom loading screen
LS800A04a.PAL - Mission 4 pallet file (used for colors in loading screen)
LS800A04a.SHP - Mission 4 custom loading screen
LS800A05a.PAL - Mission 5 pallet file (used for colors in loading screen)
LS800A05a.SHP - Mission 5 custom loading screen
LS800A06a.PAL - Mission 6 pallet file (used for colors in loading screen)
LS800A06a.SHP - Mission 6 custom loading screen
LS800A07a.PAL - Mission 7 pallet file (used for colors in loading screen)
LS800A07a.SHP - Mission 7 custom loading screen
LS800A08a.PAL - Mission 8 pallet file (used for colors in loading screen)
LS800A08a.SHP - Mission 8 custom loading screen
mapselmd.ini - List of missions, without this some of the orginal missions will play instead.
missionmd.ini - Has list of the custom briefs/objectives/mission names, without this you'll just get the defaults.
ra2md.csf - Actually stores the customs briefs/objectives/mission names, without this you'll get errors about missing strings.
readme.txt - This file, not needed to use maps.

Most the maps are pretty big, and have tons of units, so you'll most likely need a rather modern (2007) computer to play them (I'm fine with my Inspiron 6000 Pentium M 1.6GHz, integrated video, laptop). Also you'll need Yuri's Revenge for all of them. I was surprised while doing research for this mod that many people don't have it. I recommend it if you play a lot of singleplayer, as the AI is much better (not to mention the new units). I have that First Decade DVD, which has all the C&C's other than the newest one, and I recommend that as well. If not I'm sure you can find a used copy of YR for $5 (or string up your Jolly Roger and take to the high seas to get it).

Story:
This storyline takes place in place of the original RA2, even though it's for YR. The story line is just Soviet Union invading and the US fighting them off. Yuri comes in at the end, only as Soviet mind control, not as his own side. Think of it as a alternate path the original story line could have taken (taking advantage of the availability of the new YR units). The missions are probably quite a bit harder than the originals, as anyone installing mods for the game is probably pretty good (not to mention anyone still playing the game). As said above most the missions involve using a small force to take out a massive enemy force (exploiting the dumb AI).

Programs Used:
While making this I used a few programs that were very useful. I had a bit of trouble finding out about them, so if you are interested in doing something like this here's a list of what I used:
FinalAlert 2: Yuri's Revenge Editor 1.01 - Westwood Studios
Bread and butter of custom map making. Very easy to use map editor made by Westwood for the game. Not much more to say, you probably already know about it anyway.

XCC Mixer - Olaf van der Spek http://xcc.tiberian.com/
Used to open the .mix files that RA2 uses to store all the game data. If you don't know much of the game (unit strength, weapons, speed, price, lots of other stuff) is stored in regular .ini (text) files that you can edit by hand. However, these .ini's are stored together in .mix files that you can't open with any regular program. That's what this program allows you to do, extract the .ini's from the .mix's and edit them. Not as used for custom map making, but extremely useful for general moding.

Final Alert2 Map Editor Scripts – RVMECH http://www.cncgames.com
This a set of scripts for FA2, that make certain tasks much easier. There's 22 in all, but for example I used the paradrop one to customize what units get paradroped on certain maps.

Red Alert 2 CSF Files Editor - Matthias Wagner ra2stredit.wagnerma.de
Great program to let you edit the CSF file which stores all the text strings. I was going crazy trying to figure out how to get text strings to appear in the game (instead of MISSING:"text"), I was reading stuff online about how it was impossible, which I couldn't believe for a second. Finally found this program which lets you open and edit the crazy CSF file Westwood used to store all the text.

Load Screen Builder 1.1 – VK http://vk.sytes.net/
Wonderful program that let's you make custom loading screens. It was about as easy as possible too, basically a wizard. I was going through the Westwood loading screens trying to find the ones that best matched my missions, when I learned about this program I couldn't believe someone had made something so specialized and easy.

Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge All Text Files - MooMan65 Productions
All the ini's from the mix's extracted for you, so you don't need to bother with the mix's.

Legal Info:
All the stuff I made I release into the Public Domain, use it any way you want. It'd be nice to be credited if you used large portions of what I made.

If I remember correctly, Westwood didn't make Final Alert, It was the people at wagnerma.de.

and the maps looks flat :/

A downloaded and opened up each map. All the maps generally have the same idea. With your tiny attack force, destroy the fortress' that the enemy has. There are ways to make a difficult map with requiring thousands of units and buildings on the screen. Also try to detail a lot more. Most of it is pretty bland and flat with only a few patches of different LAT spread around occasionally.
