Subject description: yes...EA is attempting to make it into a game

So yea...I came across this. Normally I wouldn't post stuff concerning EA but I figured since this is a trailer to a game based off of an Epic Poem set that I REALLY like, that I would post it up. Yea that's right...EA is making a game based on an epic poem. In this case it happens to be the first part of the Divine Comedy, The Inferno, by Dante Alighieri.

Dante's Inferno: the Game's Website

I really hope they don't screw this one up. However, I think making a game based on Dante's Inferno would be REALLY hard to mess up on as I just think it would be really hard to capture the same meaning as the poem had.

Your comments/opinions?

I don't know how to express it, but I don't like it.
As a poem, Dante's Inferno is epic, amazing, beautiful. But I don't believe that you can physically make a game which captures all of the element of the original poem
Dante Alighieri has been dead long enough that EA can do whatever they want.
Though, Call of Cthulhu, (the FPS game, and the short story, and the old text adventure) was good, and there are some similarity in the task, so maybe it's possible.
EDIT: Wha? Video No longer Available? Wha?

Oh look at that! EA bases it on something "epic".

...

Oh wait. Its just another "monsters and heros, skeletons and magic", cliche game. Damn.

Whoa, whoa. well that is an indeed an epic undertaking here, Dante's Inferno is one my favorite pieces of literature and seeing this is exciting, yet feeling doubts but its nice to see game companies branch out a bit.

This adaptions well graphics are rather nice and the imagery they used is a bit appealing, not sure too sure about that weird mouth creature scene... "cerebus"?..:p but unfortunately as mentioned it just seems to fall within the stagnate realms of cliche..although seems very early, something to check out as it develops at a later date.

I brought this up when Lt made a thread about EA being Satan. I thought i very coincidental when I came across this, I mean, they say "Go to Hell" Laughing

But just looking at it, this guy isn't a poet, he's a crusader. He throws his sword at the grim reaper, who drops his sickle, which the crusader picks up and is immediatly an expert with it. I never read the poem (I read the wiki) but isn't alot of it just being sitting there suffering? And the middle, everything is frozen solid. Talk about anti climatic ending for a game. "I shall fight yee, satan" satan says "omm nom nom nom"

That's where I first saw this trailer Razz

Anyway, I think the trailer looks interesting. I have no idea about the gameplay, though.

yea...that's what bothers me. Dante is suppose to be a poet not a damn warrior who goes around killing the demons and souls in hell. Not only that but he is suppose to be led through Hell by Virgil, another poet. Then while being led the most action Dante ever does is really just following Virgil and talking to the various damned souls.

But yea, I guess if they followed the poem exactly it would be rather boring. I just hope they find a good balance between action and the actual poem and it's meaning.
Like said it's still early to make too many assumptions on this.

@ Ickus, yea I think that weird three headed mouth scene around 1:30-1:39 is suppose to be Cerberus.

Also...to anyone who hasn't read Dante's Inferno (or the entire Divine Comedy at that) I suggest doing so. I've so far only have read the Inferno and I must say it's really a great poem. I'm in the midst of rereading it though and I now have the other two parts, Purgatory and Paradise, and plan to read them after I finish Inferno again.

I saw a concept somewhere of the creature and I can say it's not Cerberus. It's literally a gigantic face with legs and the tongue of the creature spawns three additional mouths (which look like creatures themselves. Notice how their "eyes" are in fact, mouths).

This is most likely a referrence to the Sphere of Gluttony.

perhaps not, but Cerebus does guard the gluttons. :p

that video does make me wonder more about how they treat the imagery and visuals...., although as far as gameplay well..yea.

The katana/broad sword would break from the sheer amount of lost souls. *puts on knuckle duster*

I prefer to have my enemies kill each other....but that's just me...
and who's to say the chainsaw can't run on some kind of plasma cell fuel? though if we have plasma cells, I'd so use the BFG9000.
although if we want to go in other directions we could just nuke the hell out of Hell....wait...

anyways...back on topic...
doing a Google search of Cerberus Dante's Inferno and I found a concept of that weird 3 headed thing on a site and on the site it was labeled "Gluttony - Cerberus"

You know what: that may be the devil itself. From what I've read on Wikipedia about Dante's Inferno it ended with seeing the 3-headed devil chewing on 3 ppl...

It is cerberus, if you go to gaespot, they have a teser traile, it says the names of the 9 levels one after another, and shows a brief picture. after the one of gluttony, it shows that cerberus thing.

that was one quick thought that I had too. But I quickly decided against that because the thing would have to be frozen in ice then, and also it's heads should then have been three different colors; red, yellowish, and black. Besides that it would need to have wings and also in each mouth it would probably have the three bodies of the greatest punishment; Judas, Brutus, and Cassius.
so yea...there was quite a bit of stuff against that being Lucifer. Unless of course they didn't follow a lot of the poem in that...which is a good possibility.

No, that creature is definitely not Satan. It has already been confirmed that it's the Cerberus.

The thing is like organs and stuff, it's a stomach and teeth, characterization of guttony (eating). The thing is just gross. Besides, there's too much normal looking evil ghosts and stuff for them to have something so off base as their devil.
