when you mod an existing object and change the name it always says Missing:Name used.. is there a fix to this? (without changing ini files)

Put something like UIName=Name:[Something unused].

Grab XCC Mixer, go to its "launch" menu and launch the string table editor. On the left there are a number of different categories of strings such as GUI and mission objectives. Under "name" is where you should create a new string.

When you click OK to exit it out of it the file will be saved in your Ra2 directory called ra2.csf. If you want to edit the file just put it in the ra2 directory again and run the editor, it'll save straight to file.

What bolt mentioned is correct but you would need to transfer the csf to people as well.

You can only add new strings if you are making a mod.

However you can use bolts xcc, string editor method to find exisiting tags to use for example UIName=Name:GAVULC is Vulcan Cannon

Does that method overwrite the original csf file?

Yes, the new csf created by this tool will override the standard one, whenever the new one is put in an expandmdXX.mix (XX=number from 01 to 99) or the ra2 folder.

No. Nevermind. I meant does it save over the original. I made a copy and edited it and it does save over the original. I already knew about expansions.
