I have to hold a speech tomororw at school about Salvador Dalí, in Spanish. I'm not too clever at Spanish, so I'd highly appreciate it if any of you would be kind to help me correct my mistakes.

I have written so far (more to come):

My English text: Salvador Dali was born on May 11, 1904 in the figueres close to the French boarder in Catalonia, Spain. His older brother who also was named Salvador had died 9 months earlier. Salvador’s father was a middle-class lawyer and notary. He raised his son very strictly and with discipline. Dali’s mother encouraged her son’s artistic endeavors. When Salvadore reached the age of five, he was taken to his brother’s grave. Dali’s parents told him that he was his brother’s reincarnation. Salvadore put faith in what they told him. Dalí also had a three years older sister called Ana María. She would later publish a book about her brother in 1949. Later in his youth, Dalí attended drawing school. On a summer vacation to Cadaqués, Dalí discovered modern painting with the family of Ramon Pichot. He was a local artist who made regular trips to Paris. Dali’s father organized an exhibition of his charcoal drawings in their family home the next year. The first public exhibition was at the municipal theater in figures in 1919.

A little too literal you have in spots but here's what I came up with:

Salvador Dali was born May 11, 1904 in the Figueres near the French border in Catalonia, Spain. His older brother also named Salvador had died 9 months earlier. Salvador's father was a middle class lawyer and notary. He raised his son very strictly and with discipline. Dali's mother encouraged her son's artistic endeavors. When Salvador reached the age of 5, he was taken to his brother's grave. Dali's parents told him he was the reincarnation of his brother. Salvador put faith into what he was told. Dali also had a three year older sister named Ana Maria. She later published a book with her brother in 1949. Later in his youth, Dali attended drawing school. On summer vacations at Cadaqués, Dali discovered modern painting with Ramón Pichot's family. He was a local artist who made regular trips to Paris. Dali's father organized an exposition of his charcoal paintings in his family's home the next year. The first public exposition was in the Figueres Municipal Theater in 1919.

The way it's worded can lead to multiple interpretations in spots. Especially since there is no English meaning behind "Figueres". (I looked on a translator for that term. I never knew of any translation for that)

Is Figueres a town, place or something else? (If it's a town then the last sentence is correct)

First of, your speech needs a good introduction. I suggest

I already realized that. Razz

Current draft:
Salvador Dali was born on May 11, 1904 in figueres close to the French boarder in Catalonia in Spain. He is known for being a surrealistic painter, with paintings such as “Persistence of memory”. His work was described as striking and bizarre. Salvador Dali was often considered narcissistic, acting unusual and grandiose, drawing attention to himself.

Salvador Dali studied at the Academia de San Fernando. He started getting attention by fellow students. They considered him eccentric and dandy, and he also got attention for his experimental cubism paintings. He illustrated his first book in 1924. The book was the poem “The Witches of Llers” written by his friend and also a student poet Carles Fages de Climent. He was still unknown at the time. Dalí was expelled from the Academia in 1926, shortly before his final exams. He said that no one on the faculty was competent enough to examine him. He made an extremely realistic painting called Basket of Bread, and he proved to possess painting skills.

Okay, I've come far. Spanish draft:

He made an extremely realistic painting called Basket of Bread, and he proved to possess painting skills.
In 1929, Dali held another show in Paris. It was during this time he also joined the Surrealists. He met his future wife Gala Eluard, still married to the poet Paul Eluard at the time. It didn't take too long for Dali to become the leader of the Surrealist Movement, but found himself clashing with the movement more often, until he was expelled in 1934.

Dali and Gala escaped to the United States in 1940 during WWII, where they stayed until 1948. He was already moving into a new style of painting by this time, focussing on religion and science. The years in the United States would prove to be very important. Dali then moved on from surrealism to a classical period.

His health began to deteriorate in 1982 when his wife died. He had a pace maker implanted four years later and spent the rest of his life in seclusion. Salvador Dali died on January 23, 1989 from heart failure.

Salvadore Dali’s most known work is the painting The Persistence of memory. Time is the theme here In the middle, the fleshy creature we see is an approximation of Dali’s own face in profile. Mastering what he called "the usual paralyzing tricks of eye-fooling," Dalí painted this work with "the most imperialist fury of precision," but only, he said, "to systematize confusion and thus to help discredit completely the world of reality." There is, however, a nod to the real: The distant golden cliffs are those on the coast of Catalonia, where Dalís home was.

And yes, I have used a free translator because I uuberly suck in Spanish. I'd highly appreciate people correcting me.

Crash, I have a few tips for you.

For example, in spanish, you don't have to mention the nouns or pronouns all the time. So in "Él crió a su hijo muy terminantemente y con disciplina.", you have mentioned his dad one phrase before that. In spanish, you can safely say "El padre de Salvador era abogado y notario de la clase media, criando a su hijo muy terminantemente y con disciplina."
Also, in that phrase, there is an error in translation. The spanish word "terminantemente" means, with an example, when something goes batshit in a thread here an any mod or admin has to lock it, or banhammer someone. That is an act that could be called, in spanish, "terminante".
Also, it could be better if you said, instead of "más viejo", "mayor", as "mayor" has not only the meaning of "bigger", but also the one from "older".
I the first line, I think you meant "border", that being "frontera" in spanish. Also, in the last line there are other translation errors, such as "charcoal", that is "carboncillo" in spanish, and that "next", also in the last line, could be better translated into "siguiente".
Also, just to give it some more style, so to speak, I would use more commas, just a few.
Anyway, It's a well written text, just those errors I pointed out.

By the way, I made a fixed up version of your text, with my modifications.

There are two or three fixes I didn't mention before, but you will see what I am talking about, and those fixes are just oter examples of what I said before.

I hope this helps!

Sure.

I got 4+, which is quite above average. Our grade scale ranges from 1-6 with - or + (no - on 1 and no + on 6) to add more indication. Most people got 3s on this one, the usual average grade is 3 to 4. Therefore, I'm very happy with 4+. Very Happy
