You should probably consider upgrading all of those listed components first.

Grab a modo with a LGA755 chipset and a duel core atleast, you may find that you done even need to overclock at all.

Upgrade your ram to 4 gigs minimum @ 800 MHz with 4,4,4,12 timings preferably.

Consider upgrading your video card to a HIS HD4850 512mb and your power supply to a Corsair VX 550W.

so

Chipset:- either an E7200 or E8400 or simillar
Mobo:- Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L
Ram:- A-DATA 4Gb 800MHz
Gfx card:- HIS HD 4850 512MB
PS:- VX 550W

All these parts where roughly $740US 6 months ago so they should be much cheaper now.

If you wantes to spend alittle extra I would also recommend a Q6600 CPU.

Happy hunting:P

usually its done via the bios settings, some programs also allow you to over clock like speedfan if it supports your mobo

idk what bios you have so it varies

Er dude..........

Your graphics card is AGP, your system is not.. The mobo I listed uses PCI Express and the graphics card connects to the mobo via PCI Express. These will replace your current ones so it won't be a problem.

Time for an upgrade me thinks Rolling Eyes

Expensive, maybe? Perhaps he can't afford all that shit?

I know I can't and my rig shares a few parts with his (256 meg radeon 9550). Lickily though I have an LGA775 board so I've bought a core2 duo (1.86) and 2gb or RAM (running at 553mhz, 1 stick is actually 600 but the other is 553).

I don't see much of a point in overclocking such an old chip. It'd be like re-tuning the engine of a Miata and getting 20 more horsepower out of it.

Enough to coax a few extra MPH out of it?

That's the point. You'll get maybe a little bit more power out of a Penium 4 with an overclock, but getting a new system will make so much more of a difference.

Spot on Sir Modsalot Smile

Yeah it may be alittle pricey but all this stuff was $740US 6 months ago. You can find cheaper prices as well for hardware that performs simillarly. Its all about shopping around and seeing what is and is not available and for what price.

have you tried turning off a lot of the background programs? Open up task manager and close everything that is not absolutly needed. No overclocking needed, and you still free up some stuff.

I remember on my old comp, I would shut down windows explorer and it would make YR run faster.

the "8GB" is how much RAM it can support, not how much it has but the max it supports.
lga 775 is the "plug" or socket on the mobo where the processor sits, it absolutely HAS to be the same it or it will not work.

also I forgot to add in a fan and heatsink which are absolute necessaries

and a stab in the dark for memory:
8GB (4 x 2GB) for $139.99
the 8gb is the total amount of RAM and the 4 is how many sticks of RAM and 2GB is the RAM size
2GB (2 x 1GB) for $69.99

glad to help
oh and pci express x16 2.0 video cards slots are backward compatible with pci express x16
DDR2 and DDR3 memory are not compatible (do not get DDR3 unless the mobo says elsewise)
power supplies usually have 24 or 20+4 pin, be careful which one you choose (the one I showed you has 24 with another 4)
hopefully someone else here know how to explain power rails 'cause I don't know jack about that except more is better vs wattage

You mean...about Molex and 4/6 pins?

and about DDR2/DDR3, if they aren't compatible, what should I do?

This is the cable to worry about this is 20+4 (some higher end mobos require 24+8 Confused)
PSU Connectors

DDR3 is only supported on Intel i7 boards but all that stuff is expensive and I doubt you want to splurge #Tongue

When looking for RAM, look at the speed.
in which case you want DDR2 1200 for this mobo. If you read the Specifications page you'll see in the memory section it says Memory Standard DDR2 1200
also dual channel means you use the first RAM slot and the third, then if you add more (or if its the same 4 RAM sticks) you install the sticks in slots two and four such as below

More Info on DDR2
another side note pci express x1 x4 x8 x16 are entirely different slots

PCI Express x16 2.0 is the best for video card performance so long as the card is x16 2.0 as well

SATA is way better than IDE/PATA for both Hard drive and optical (CD/DVD) drives although most people will argue that there isn't much of a performance difference

DDR2 and DDR3 are not compatable, they have different pin configurations to prevent people from trying to jam a wrong ram stick in a wrong socket.

Solution:- buy compatible ram sticks that are supported by the mobo you want to use, they are relatively cheap.

hmmm, so that means I cant plug DDR2 ram sticks into DDR3-only Mobos? right?

Inzane, just forget about DDR3 for now. Not only will it require you to buy a rather expensive mobo, but you will also need to buy the ram sticks themselves which are also very expensive.

e.g A DDR3 mobo like the GIGABYTE GA-EX58 - Extreme would cost you $427US and the ram say 12GB CORSAIR DOMINATOR 1866MHz DDR3 would cost you $2,757US.

Just get 4GB of DDR2 for around $70 - $100. That will be enough to play the latest games no probs, as long as you have a better graphics card that is.

the stuff I offered up there should fit the 500 dollar price range and maybe a little extra for a video card but that really depends on what you're looking for in a vid card
these variably cost from 50.00 to about 100.00, read the reviews and check the rating
