I have both RA2 and Yuri Revenge. I want to mod one or the other But I have heard that the Yuri engine "although newer" is worse than the RA2 one. Is this true? and which one would you guys recommend I mod? Confused

Mod YR. It has way more features, and things like NPatch and Ares.

You can pretty much play any resolution you want by editing the ra2(md).ini #Tongue

But which one is more stable and less likely to give me problems? and what is this Npatch/area, is this like an illegal hack or something?

Oh and WOW!, this place has alot of information, dating back to like 2003 and crap.

I recommend YR. As mentioned before, it has far more creative features (OpenTopped, "proper" UC logics, a shit-ton more) and is better known.

Not to mention Ares, Rockpatch (original project that NPatch and Ares are descended from), and NPatch. No they are not technically illegal. EA does not seem to care AFAIK. Ares while being slowly developed is currently shaping to be a vastly superior modding platform for YR than anything before it. Both stability wise (a major detractor towards NPatch) and features wise.

they both have thier up's and downs. RA2 has a few features YR dosent, and YR has a ton more than RA2 (if you use NPatch or RockPatch). I'm still not sure which one is the better, guess it depends on your preference and what you plan to do.

What features does RA2 have that YR doesn't beyond the laser fences allegedly working there (I've not tested it myself)? Given that they will be fixed in Ares, there is nothing really to recommend RA2 over YR for modding.

The reason I mod YR is because of the multiplayer options, which are way better. Who the hell doesnt want to select their allies and positions beforehand?

yea, laser fences are one feature, "they do work, I have tested" there were a couple more things I got to work that I think didnt work in patched YR, but cant remember what they were it's been so long. I myself prefer RA2 over YR but thats my opinion.

I think i will start simple with ra2. maybe do a couple new voxels and some recoding/recoloring of things first. ive done alot of reading up on things here and other sites. seems yr with these patches is kind of difficult, atleast for me at the moment will be. anyhoo is it hard to do a single player or should i start with a multiplayer map type mod? im a straight noobie so bear with me ok.

RA2 is a great starting point. It's simple and clean. It doesn't have a lot of modding potential but it does need some more mod love.

Move to YR later after you have a grasp of the basics and have a small mod made for at least your friends.

I agree with this. Modding Yuri is so much better, especially when you make new terrain for Yuri.

Not really, all it does is give a better idea of the modding eco system and what options are/may be available to mod the game. As you say, you don't HAVE to use the patches.

As for laser fences, its good to have confirmation that they do work in RA2, but since I have yet to see a decent set of graphics for the feature that fits with the rest of RA2's style, its more of a curiosity to me than anything else.
