why is it when I extract the terrain it comes out wierd colored?

um.. That's a normal map.

A special type of 3d texture..that causes light to render more detailed surfaces upon a 3d model

It means that a flat area can appear to have far more detail than can normally be modelled onto it. It also reacts to the ambient lighting, iirc.

I have it figured out now, once I converted the tga files to png the screens that were whited out were the regular terrain tiles. Thanks guys!
