I Recently downloaded SHP Builder to make some cameos. Why is it that some images that i paste appear perfect as i copied them and others appear very grainy? This happens at random, i do the exact same thing before i paste each image. Im guessing it has something to do with a paletter or the image being to hi-def... does anyone know how to fix this?


BTW, i made a Tesla drone cameo and it looks amazing, this image decided to work. Anyone want it?

Thats just the terror drone, but we all start somewhere. Smile

As far as the graininess goes in your others, that likely is happening due to the cameo being in the wrong palette, or not entirely matching cameo.pal

do you resize the pictures down to cameo size before you paste them into shp builder, or do you resize them in SHP Builder? SHP Builder has afaik only a very easy resize function that isn't comparable to one from an advance picture editing program that also includes anti-aliasing and filters for the resize.

Another reason could be the cameo palette that has only a very limited amount of colors.

Post an example picture so we can see what you mean with "grainy". Wink

Here you go. This is an example. I copy the image directly from something, and paste it. Some turn out perfect and exactly the same, some turn out like this Sad

Welcome to the wonderful world of cameo.pal. That's intended behavior. The palette is only 256 specific colors so when you apply the palette, all non-matching colors get converted to the closest RGB value.

Put simply, there's nothing you can do about it.

The RA2 cameo palette is a good example for a completely useless palette.

20 shades of nearly the same white, zyan and grey, but no primary colours like yellow, red and green.

This is what i call a good palette. Very Happy
Nearly all colors available and some like the rare used magenta can still be replaced with some more shades of grey, brown or whatever you need.

Well... LKO... you have to remember, they designed the palette around their needs, not ours. All of the original cameos look good with the existing palette. So. Yeah.

Well using that palette with SHP Builder none of my cameos would come out good at all.

yeah it was just a fast edit to show what i had in mind.
Which colors are missing and should be added?

the brighter versions of the primary colors on the top left could be replaced for example with a complete rainbow transition from one to another color.

I think the light purple colors should be replaced with yellow-orange so its possible to make flame in cameos. and some grey-grey-blue might be needed

maybe you have done something wrong

i think it doesn't looks that bad, considering the low amount of colors

Also the shown palette was just a quick assembly and not meant as a final palette. For a final palette it should be edited to have the magenta replaced with something more useful, like orange or different shades of metallic grey/blue etc.

If it doesn't meets your needs, go and edit it yourself. #Tongue I'll never use it myself anyway, because i don't use/mod RA2.

I also found it to be better to change the High Res image to 256 colors with a photo editor. Just seems to make things work for the better, for me atleast.

I bet you opened a cameo in shp builder and then loaded LKO's palette.

You need to copy the cameo, load the palette and then paste it in there.
Do note though: I always use printscreen -> past it in paint -> cut out the cameo -> paste in shp builder again, since copying something in shp builder will cause the outer pixels to disappear.
