Alright, I have been trying to solve a problem that I have.
for some time now I have been drawing up a concept I have for a strategy game.
my problem is, Im just not sure which engine I should use.
2D or 3D
I have been leaning towards 2D, something much like TS or RA2,
though everyones going 3D now-a-days.
I am still a ways away from starting actual graphic work, but im just wondering what you all think.

Chaotic

(Im not sure where I should put this post, so if this shouldnt be here, I quick move wont hurt anything.)

3D but static isometric perspective, would be ideal, oldshool and with a lot more possibilities, effect wise/visual wise

I would suggest 3d because it offers many graphical advantages and since the engine will be newer there may be mroe possibilities open to you depending on what you want to do. The terrain in 3d games I find to be superior, and with less effort put in. Unit and buildings graphics may be inferior as pre-rendered stuff has no real limit, although the 3d stuff may have more options and effects you can apply. As for coding, the 3d is more advanced yet can offer some more rewards.

I'd say 3d JUST because of the power presented in the engines. Compare Gens/ZH to RA2/YR for a good comparison.

ah,

heads up

What you should be asking yourself not what will look better but if you can actually do the artwork yourself?

like do YOU, yourself possess the skills to make 3d stuff? because the bitter cold truth is not many 3d artist will flock to make stuff for you, same thing goes with 2d.

3D models I can do, I been making models for about 4 years now, and even took a few classes to.
so thats not an issue. though, I still lack alittle when it comes to animations.
also, rendered objects are smoother, and I wouldnt have to worry about any vertex limits.
but 3D does have many more possiblities.
though, wouldnt it be possible to put such things as dynamic lighting, infinate color palettes, etc. into a 2D engine.
If I render from 3D to 2D, I should be able to get the same feeling as a 3D engine gives.
I still have a ways to go before I can start work anyways.
though, I have been thinking, when everyone else is going 3D, wouldnt there be originality in going 2D?

thoughts?

edit: here are some models I have made in the past.
(this are just examples that I have on photobucket, I cannot show any current work because Im not at my computer right now)

I was just playing around with some lights

I have some more examples some where, I will try to find them.

here are two more, I had this in the 3D Model section

though I will admit, I still havent fiquered out how to model people yet.

2D graphics have an effect that i call "toy effect",its such a thing:You can pick the model used in 2D out as is and make an toy from it.Its a good thing not bad, many people like the old games because of this effect.
3D leans more on realism against 2D does.In 3D you can replicate the reality on your screen whilst 2D gives more room for creativity in general.

it depend on what you using 2d/3d for? if you work with some thing that need to be realism your choice is 3d. but if you try to do something look cartoony 2d still better choice.

as i know 3d is more easy be out of date than 2d. Starcraft still look beautiful even now but General seem boxy for today.

Crysis may look very photo realistic for today but 10 year later everyone may cant stand with it graphic who know?

Muramasa is the most beautiful 2d game i ever seen , and it still look beautiful even 10 year have past.

do you think what more beautiful between Dune:Emperor [one of the most beautiful 3d rts in that time IMO] and Ra2YR?

2D because its mostly dying out (RTS wise) and it shouldnt be. Not every game has to be 3D just because the technology exists.
