Well, I finally got electricity back , after 30 or so hours, so if anyone was wondering, I'm fine. Water service has been suspended recently, indefinitely, so they can make repairs. But there's an electric well in my backyard, so it's not a big deal to me.
Besides that, I think I'm lucky since I didn't lose anything, besides a bottle of rum. Though damage in my city was nothing compared to the rest of the country. The worst was an old historic theatre, which now has a huge crack in the middle, but it doesn't seem that it's going to collapse.
However I still haven't had a word from my grandparents who were on the city of Tomé, which is, at the moment, completely unreachable. The news said that 2 foreign tourists disappeared, I fear that they might be my grandparents, considering they are legally Canadians, though the city is a minor vacation point for tourists, so hopefully it's not them.
Anyway the earthquake was quite long, almost 4 minutes, and as the latest reports say 8º Richter (here), and 9º at the epicentre. QUICK_EDIT
I can only wonder what an earthquake feels like. One of our teachers happened to be in a vacation in Italy during an earthquake a year or two ago. Luckily nothing happened to him or his family. _________________

The threat is not over, as aftershocks may still happen a month or so after the first earthquake.
Anyway, things have almost returned to normality here (just an interrupted water supply). But that's because, the region of Valparaiso wasn't struck as hard (damage wasn't extensive, the earthquake was still as strong), specially the city of Villa Alemana, where I live (no damage due to tsunamis since it's quite far from the coast); which only had 15 buildings declared in risk of collapse, which is nothing compared to the rest of the country, specially to the south, which is in ruins.
Also, I found my grandparents they are fine , I just wish they would return home already, since they don't have electricity or water there. QUICK_EDIT
I heard today that the earthquake in Chile was 500 times more powerful than the one in Haiti. Luckily your building codes are far more stricter. QUICK_EDIT
Good to see you made it thru the chaos! I wouldnt wish an earthquake on anybody.
Anybody here from Banshee lately?, I believe he lives down there as well.
Hope he's all right. _________________

The moral of the story is - capitalism saves lives. Pinochet made Chile have high standards in building construction and wow, when Chile suffered an earthquake the damage is minimal. Haiti on the other hand...
Good luck to you, Machine! I hope everything is ok! QUICK_EDIT

Not quite. Here there's capitalism, yet I bet that something like what happened in Chile or Haiti would happen here, most of structures would become a big pile of shit.Romania would become a even bigger pile of shit. QUICK_EDIT

The same applies to Brazil, Deformat. But the problem here is that most of the country is located in a safe place, with no earthquakes or vulcan activity... not even tornados (except for the south of the country). I've never heard of a tsunami here, although few cities in the northeast of the country are being invaded by water (they were probably built in a place that was previously flooded).
So, due to lack of risks, engineering services here are very suspicious and I'm sure that many buildings would fall in a 8 dot something earthquake, like the one from Chile. But here, we also have a lot of slums and all of them would be destroyed, just like what happened to Haiti, killing hundreds of thousands of people... or even millions.
Anyway, I'm glad that Machine is fine after this disaster.
My sister had a trip to Santiago scheduled for tomorrow... but, she had to change the destination after this earthquake, so she is going to Buenos Aires (Argentina) instead. QUICK_EDIT

Brazil had few cities in the south affected by the earthquake, but it only shaked few fragile objects. In my city, there was no earthquake at all. Since Brazil's coast is the atlantic ocean and not the pacific, there was no tsunami either. QUICK_EDIT
ahhhh, good to hear Banshee. I hope everythings going well over ther in Chile. But it's probably going to take month's to sort everything out. _________________
