I'm in the process of making my own website from scratch. It's coming along pretty good, but just wanted to know if anyone knows how I can use my own computer to host my website. Like is there a way to make my computer it's own server to host it and have it so people can download files right of hte hard drive?

Yes, it's very possible but it's not that simple. If you have no prior knowledge, don't even try. You'll end up exposing your entire hard drive instead, which is very bad.

The other thing to remember is your connection. If it's not very fast, your entire site will be painfully slow.

well I'm not worried about the hard drive being exposed, the only things that will be on the hard drive will be stuff I put on it for download. And if for some reason I put something on there that I dont want people to have access to I can always lock the folder its in. "I'm using a spare motherboard and harddrive that I have hooked up in my desk drawer"

I have a copy of Windows Server 2003. This will be the OS for it. I'm going to google for some help, but in the mean time if you have some tips for me or suggestions on how to get started I'm all ears.

Oh and my internet speed is 10mb. It's pretty fast!

10 mbps or Mbps? There's a MASSIVE difference between the two. In any case, that connection is not enough to sustain a fully functional website with consistent speed.

And if you're going to run a server, use Linux and Apache. Self-servers with Server 2003 are usually too slow.

eh, I'm only going to host a small website that will host my MOD and a few other things like Models and shps I make that I want to become available to others. It's not going to be a massive thing here. And it's highly unlikely that there will be Multiple,Multiple people trying to download stuff from my site at the same time anyway. The only culprit's I'll have to keep to a minimum is gifs and animations so bandwitdh isnt choked to death. I have a few different choices I found googling so I'll let you know how this pans out. I'll need a few of you to test it for me anyway.
