Yeah because I totally want a group of people who don't care of the modding community running Red Alert.

Also, not going to happen especially with the new uncaring jackoff in APOC's place.

This has been discussed many times, and there is legal red flags behind the source codes. In short, you aren't getting them. Ever.

There is a reason the source code is lost. It was lost during the Westwood's purchase. And chances are, most likely than not - forever.

yea, I could imagine Westwood's office during those times, like a Nod Temple being besieged by EA/GDI/Modder forces. Yep, through Flames and fire, rubber and debris, ..and then you have a few programmers hiding in the mist of destruction, holding onto with the source code like that ancient scrin artifact. Fearing it would fall into the wrong hands...

Source code has since remained the stuff of legends, since modders got their hands on rules.ini, like a fabled unicorn or some mutated cryptid, remains elusive and now perhaps non-existantly extinct.

Isn't going to happen. Fanciful, yes. A great idea? Yes.

But not even Yuri's Grinder could cut through the red tape.

I wouldn't want anyone at Strike Team anywhere near the source code.

Wonder if the source code was lost earlier then we think. I mean... anybody with the source code could've edited and updated the game with ease, rather than a bunch if half assed hacks like using the dig sound for a nuke sire. Westwood's shitty coding must have a reason... no?

Or how low they were really aiming :/

It just seems to me that whatever game westwood created, they almost always required really low end crap to run..

No, they were just bad programmers. Remember, they didn't get BONUS POINTS.

Technically THERE IS Westwood Institute of Something, Something, Computer-related. But that's offtopic.

Now, hating Westwood's programing - that's something I can agree with. But then again, Westwood never did care about modding communities, and didn't intend for anyone to go into the game (despite how blatant the modding communities seemed).

I don't see that it matters much whether or not we have the source code.
Chances are we'd see the same names as those working hard on constructing Ares digging around in the source, and I don't see a crusade towards that end being any better than, say, helping find bugs in Ares. That would get us a more stable, expanded engine to play with.

In fact, I feel that a campaign to find the lost source code is probably less useful than do something as productive as bug-testing, because a campaign simply ties up people's time and resources which could be put to such better use.

Don't waste your time attempting to get the original source code of these games. Ares is the future, guys.

Problem being, Ares only focuses on modding, not on fixing bugs for a general global game patch the players would all benefit from.

Truthfully, most of the issues can be fixed with balancing patches (1.002?). The 'general players' probably don't even know about 1.002, never mind that a consensus would -never- be realized and purists would bitch to high hell about a patch done by fans, even if it deleted LTNKBARL.vxl

Ares does fix some bugs Nyerguds, which would you be referring to and have you reported them on the Ares bug tracker?

Agreed here. Has any commercial game ever really released the full source code? Short of the UDK, I can't think of one. I could be wrong though.

In fairness, I can think of a few. id tend to open the source for their games after a certain amount of time. All games pre-Doom 3 are open source I believe. Team 17 released the Worms Armageddon source to some people in the community and they continue to maintain it.

What Clazzy said. And the engine powering DOOM III, Quake IV, etc is rumored to be coming soon.

Like I said, I wasn't exactly sure, but one company isn't exactly numerous either.
