The reason for this post is because of the recent interest I have found of people wanting to create their own tile. I have been using both programs to make my road pieces. Some time ago I found a problem when saving large pieces.

My process was make a 14 by 14 piece in Tmp Builder, then import an image that I created in 3D Max on top of that. Then I would save it and then open it with Tmp Editor. If the piece looked fine I would make a smaller piece 5 by 5 and copy and paste the proper pieces to that and save it (the 5by5 piece). I think the biggest size you can save with the Tmp Editor is 8by8. If you try saving any bigger the Editor crashes.

Tmp Editor is very picky & several things can make it crash or make files corrupt, especially when adding or deleting cells.

Well, if you make it in the Tmp Builder I guess 20by20 is fine, it is just that when you try editing anything in the Tmp Editor it gets funny. I only make big tiles to get things to line up properly then make smaller tiles and copy the pieces out.

@ MigEater: Um.....that might explain some of the Except.txt that I had been getting. DCoder had told me that the errors could be corrupt tiles, guess if I have to delete any tiles best to use the Tmp Builder.

Edit: What process do you use top make your tiles? I seem to be having an issue with dirt textures showing up properly. So far grass & concrete come out fine. Dirt gets all screwed up.

It's probably because their isn't many browns in the pal so dirt is hard to do. You can try using a simpler texture with less contrast but TBH the best thing to do is make a new pal with more browns.

3dsMax isnt the best program to use for making terrain for RA2/YR anyway. Your best bet is to do them with a photo editing program like PSP/Photoshop. Using those you can apply the Isotem.pal to image and see if it will work correctly or look good without having to do any other or unecessary work.
Make yourself some terrain temlates, paste them over existing images, apply the isotem.pal to them, if they look good then use it. If not try an alternate image. I've made some pretty good looking dirt terrain using the standard isotem.pal, you just have to get a hold of some decent dirt images that work.
IMO, the only time you should use temp editor is if your replacing an existing image with same type of data. You already have TempBuilder, so just use that for all your new terrain.

Well, I use them together, but the Tmp Editor is more of editing tool as you mentioned.

As far as how to make them, Using 3D Max for my roads is better and are coming along nicely. I was just about done with them when I noticed a few bugs. Since I had the original files I first started with it has been an easier task at fixing my tiles. Take a look at the other post. I'll be replacing those pics within the next few days. As for other stuff, yeah I can see your point.

BTW, your roads look pretty good.
